Naming Warships

so if yall had to rename the current and incoming CVNs in USN service (almost all of which are named after people except for the Enterprise)
what would you choose?

If I was going to pick names for the next three (Miller, Bush, and Clinton), I would pick Intrepid and Hornet as the rule followers and Kitty Hawk as the rule breaker. DDG-145 would have to be renamed. Renaming current carriers, I would make sure to include Reprisal, Ranger, Independence, and Constellation.

One thing that needs to happen is to stop giving ships the full name of the people they were named after. Lenah H. Sutcliffe Higbee was a Superintendent of the US Navy Nurse Corps and the first woman to earn the Navy Cross. She has had two ships named after her, the Gearing-class USS Higbee (DD-806) and then the Burke-class USS Lenah H. Sutcliffe Higbee (DDG-123). There are enough letters and names to tell the difference between Higbee and other ships. We also do not need a DDG named after Ray Mabus.

Can't say anything good about Russia there - our naming conventions now are confusing mess

I'd like to resurrect the pre-Civil War naming convention used for steam frigates, at least part of the time: rivers, augmented by mountains. Of course, Kearsage is a mountain. USS Denali, please.

Ammunition ships are named after volcanic mountains: Shasta, Mount Hood, Kilauea, Kiska, etc. I think that's apropos.

Most of the discussion here is on American warship names, but here's some naming conventions elsewhere

Japan
DDH (Carriers) = old provincial names such as Izumo (now Shimane) or Kaga (now Ishikawa)
DDGs = mountains such as Kirishima, Chokai, etc
DD = weather, moon or climate such as Takanami, Asahi, etc
FFMs = rivers such as Mogami, etc
Subs = Ocean related such as Oyashio

China PRC
Carriers and large amphibious assault ships = provinces such as Liaoning, Fujian or Hainan
Destroyers = major cities such as Lhasa, Nanchang
Frigates = also cities such as Yulin
Corvettes = smaller cities like Meizhou
Transport docks = mountains like Kunlun Shan
Nuclear subs = long march plus number
Conventional subs = greatwall plus number

South Korea
Destroyers = major historical figures like Sejong or Yi Sun Shin
Frigates = cities or provinces like Incheon or Daegu
Corvettes = cities like Pochang
Submarines = historical figures like Jang Bogo
amphibious ships = islands like Dokdo or Marado

North Korea
this one is harder because many of their ship names are names used by other countries, but the new ones they've built have been historical military or communist figures.


Thailand
Destroyers = historical people like Phra Ruang
Frigates = rivers like Chao Phraya
Corvettes = historical places like Sukhothai
Submarines = mythological creatures like Matchanu or Wirun

India
Carriers = Values or ideas in Sanskrit like Vikrant
Destroyer = major cities like Delhi
Frigates = mountains or weapons like Shivalik or Nilgiri
old frigates = rivers like Ganga
Submarines = historic submarine names like Arihant

Point of order, Japan has been using other names for subs for a while now: dragons for the Soryu-class (which happen to share many names with the IJN carriers), and now whales for the Taigei-class. I believe these are all mythological names, not biological names.

We've drifted into comedy here, for which some of you are unsuited. For what it's worth, I admire the Royal Navy's minatory names of a century ago. Names like Indomitable, Implacable, Conqueror, Centurion, Tiger, Furious, Dreadnought, Superb, Hercules, Audacious, Triumph, and Thunderer. Unapologetically smash-mouth names which would let friends and foes alike know that our warship means business. But the masculine spirit may indeed be of a bygone age.

The only sub in the USN which has a cigar band. I did not have battle relations with the opposing sub.
