LRAW is to be the replacement/supplement for current vertically launched stand-off anti-submarine weapons currently employed by the U.S. Navy and it’s allies. Long range ASW capabilities are currently shouldered by the RUM-139C Vertical Launched Anti-Submarine Rocket (VL-ASROC), which consists of a booster/guidance section designed to propel a Mark-46 or Mark-54 Lightweight Torpedo to a designated drop point, from where the torpedo will seek out it’s target.

Hopefully something as simple as VLA-ER?

To provide defense against existing and future ASW threats, Lockheed Martin is currently extending the range of the VLA. This new missile, the VLA Extended Range (VLA-ER), will provide four to five times more range by adding a wing glide kit to the existing system. VLA-ER reuses nearly 90 percent of the existing VLA and includes a common configuration allowing both ship and air launch.

LRAW is relevant to AUKUS Pillar 2, the advanced technology wing of the trilateral security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. While Pillar 1 focuses exclusively on helping Australia acquire its first fleet of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines, Pillar 2 is about everything else in the future of warfare. Pillar 2 aims to accelerate the joint development and “interoperability” of several high-tech capabilities and one of the “key focus area” of AUKUS Pillar 2 is “Undersea Capabilities”.

The budget doc mentions modifications to VLA, at least for testing purposes. That does feel very much like VLA-ER, which probably is not going to be sub-compatible.

I mean, it probably could be encapsulated to fit a torpedo tube or VPM but it seems unlikely.

I guess they would want to launch it from submarine VLS, but it'd be a tough call.

Do you mean, from submarines?

To an extent, yes, but an extended range ASW standoff weapon could engage targets out at least one convergence zone, which even a heavyweight torpedo can't reach in a timely fashion (or at all, depending on there the CZs are).
 
Realistically, is anyone detecting a submarine target at a CZ range and does the firing sub want to give away its precise position to launch an ASW attack? It seems like a very niche use capability.

VLA-ER seems like a pretty off the shelf solution that minimizes changes to launch platform training, and logistics.
 
Upgrading VLASROC seems more appropriate. D variant . The missile isn16 feet long including booster so More powerful booster would add several miles range or speed boost.
