Guess Russians no longer use Belarus airspace. Because Kyiv is within striking distance from there.

AEW tho is a big target. Back in the day i made estimate of the SAAB-340 AEW RCS.

The AEWInteractions

Which include the Erieye. 12 frequencies were modeled from VHF down to X-band. Result wise, compared to baseline SAAB-340, the RCS for AEW variant is about 6% higher.

Considerably less than what i expected (1.6 times or 160% based on what i did for a hypothetical A-320AEW) Still, 15-20 Sqm from VHF to X-band is kinda risky.

To be confirmed... was a false rumor. My bad.

That photo is unmistakably an An-26, not a Saab 340. The tail ramp is clearly visible.

Another way you can tell the difference is that the An-26's wings are shoulder mounted whereas the Saab-340's wings are belly mounted.

This should help the F-16 and Mirages but - beware of R-37 missiles.
R-37s are a real problem. Only when Ukraine receives fighters capable of carrying Meteors will there be a reliable countermeasure to it, and these are in very short supply among the whole of the European air forces.

Defense Updates has just put out a video concerning the arrival in Ukraine of the first Saab 340 Erieye and how getting this aircraft will be a big boost for Ukraine in its air defence:

On May 29, 2024, Sweden announced its largest military aid package to Ukraine to date, valued at approximately $1.3 billion. According to an official press release, the package is primarily focused on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and meeting other critical defense needs. The centerpiece of this aid is the donation of Airborne Surveillance and Control (ASC 890) aircraft, commonly known as the Saab 340 AEW&C or Saab 340 Erieye.
Ukraine has reportedly taken delivery of the first of two Swedish aircraft, a move that could draw significant concern from Russia due to its potential impact on the regional air surveillance balance. The Swedish aircraft was spotted making its initial test flight over the Lviv region in western Ukraine, according to reports from Ukrainian news outlet UNIAN. The aircraft operated at an altitude of around 3,000 meters, flying a clearly visible pattern that was tracked by open-source flight monitoring platforms. It was identified under the callsign “WELCOME.”
In this video, Defense Updates analyzes why Ukraine getting Swedish SAAB 340 Erieye will be a significant boost?

Erieye probably has useful range against 10 m2 RCS targets of 500-600 km, if not more. And ruaf likely doesn't dare going much over the frontline/border, if at all. So there should be quite a margin of safety there. Greater risk to the awacs would be ground strikes with ballistic missiles, when the plane is on the ground. Which should be most of the time.

how do you calculate this probably range? any sources? or did you just guesstimate?

Hmm where is it going to operate from? because the r37M was made specifically for this sort of mission. Ig from near kiev away from frontlines to track missiles that are attacking central or western ukraine?
well its life expectancy won't be high being the most targeted asset on the battlefield plus as mentioned R-37M's were designed to engage this. Will we finally see a refutation of the idea Awacs are supposedly more survivable than ground radars on a modern battlefield? Space Based Radars will increasingly be the only safe option against aams (though they too can be targeted)

Its an estimate based on saabs claims that erieye er radar has instrumented range of 650 km. And that even small boats can be seen to the sea horizon (so probably 400 km)

Of course, if ukraine didn't get erieye er but just regular old erieye, than the figure would be less. Older erieye promo graphs showed 450 km instrumented range and some generic fighter jets around 370 km away from the plane.

Now that i think of it, these planes Ukraine just got are likely used ex swedish af planes with old erieye. So not as good, obviously.

The Ukrainians will have it flying where it is unlikely to be targeted by an AA-13 Axehead AAM.

well they better fly it over west ukraine then cause its going to be a primary propoganda target for russia and kyiv is not too far away from russian airspace

With only a 6% increase in RCS, it sounds like the only way you'd sort out any Erieyes from other Saab 340s is by listening for the Erieye radar emissions.

It's likely to fly somewhere in West Ukraine for anti-drone/anti-curise missions. I don't see it flying close to frontline, with R-37M proliferation and especially w/ possibility of meeting Su-57.
