Not surprising this has been popularized, as it's rather aesthetically pleasing, compared to the proposed configurations which were terrific abominations beyond the FB-22-1.
That was my favorite too. If they wanted an "FB" it should have been the FB-23.Not surprising this has been popularized, as it's rather aesthetically pleasing, compared to the proposed configurations which were terrific abominations beyond the FB-22-1.
I'd have to agree. The FB-23 greatly benefits from being more a clean-sheet design while the FB-22 proposals were of course trying to make as much use of the existing F-22 production line as possible. That was my favorite too. If they wanted an "FB" it should have been the FB-23.
Clean sheet is the wrong term I guess. Its clearly based off work done on the design and configuration of the F-23, but since there was no existing production line there is no attempt to reuse sections of that airframe. The FB-22 meanwhile was trying to do that to reduce costs, but being constrained by that means it would have been less capable than the FB-23.FB-23 would have derived as much as possible from the YF/F-23 configurations, really, just a larger F-23.
