Why is this called TU-160A while I'm referring to this unknown Tupolev project, not to be confused with the Tu-160 Blackjack bomber?

Is this a derived Tu-154 unknown project? Do you have any more images of this project? Why it is called "TY-160A" in the image? Give me a general description about this enigmatic Tupolev aircraft?

These questions—and many others—will be answered in the next episode of ... мыло!

OK, OK I'm being cruel. Could it be a repeat of the famous Tu-22M situation?

Please note that i posted these threads like this because I wanted to know more about these, and I didn't know what will happen other than I expect that people would start reading this thread and not cause controversy.

I wondered if this drawing was of the original 1970s "Tu-154M" project which was a 250-seater stretch of the Tu-154; it doesn't appear to be long enough and there is no indication of the additional single-wheel landing gears which were meant to retract into the wing-root fairings......

It's a future Tu-154M airliner with D-30KU engines and improved aerodynamics. It was initially designated as "Tu-160", but then re-designated Tu-154M (apparently to avoid confusing with ongoing strategic bomber project)

Ooh, maybe it could have been

What was the Tu-22M situation? What was that all about?
Well, back in the old days of the Soviet Union, the word was that the Tupolev design bureau asked for money for a new bomber design (which would become Backfire). The government said 'Niet!' to a new bomber, but said 'Da!' to Tupolev modifying the Tu-22 (Blinder). So, Tupolev renamed the new bomber design 'Tu-22M' got the money and produced the Backfire.

Whether it's true or not, I don't know, but it's worthy of an episode of Soap. I'm sure someone on here will put me right.
