Westinghouse. The Westinghouse Co. in East Pittsburgh, which is primarily known for its gas turbine development, has filed a patent for gasoline-electric propulsion in aircraft. As the illustration shows, two gasoline engines
are installed in the center of gravity of the fuselage as a power source, each driving a three-phase generator. The generated electricity is then used to drive electric motors in the wing, which run synchronously and each drive a thrust screw. The advantage is that the engines can be installed inexpensively in the fuselage, and that the electric motors in the wing take up little space and run smoothly.
The motors themselves can be serviced in the fuselage at any time. They can also be replaced by gas turbines, such as those already used in the USA
to drive small power generators. Inventors are Lee A.Kilgore, Forest Hills, Frank
