What new materials are there?

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2486653-bioplastic-habitats-on-mars-could-be-built-from-algae
The idea of 3D-printing bioplastic habitats is about a decade old, but the new experiment shows that these really could sustain life, says Amor Menezes at the University of Florida. “This is tremendously exciting. A journey to Mars, and a stay on Mars, will be roughly a couple of years long, so we can’t take everything with us,” he says. “This shows that bioplastics can potentially support life in Mars-like conditions, and maybe that a lot of useful objects during a Martian stay could be bioplastic.”

Feynman to the rescue
https://www.caltech.edu/about/news/...rams-to-make-predictions-about-real-materialsIn the new paper, the researchers have applied DMC calculations in diverse systems that contain polarons, including lithium fluoride, titanium dioxide, and strontium titanate. The scientists say their work opens up a wide range of predictions that are relevant to experiments that people are conducting on both conventional and quantum materials—including electrical transport, spectroscopy, superconductivity, and other properties in materials that have strong electron-phonon coupling.

https://scitechdaily.com/scientists-create-new-supermaterial-that-could-replace-plastic/ Bacterial cellulose.

"To strengthen the cellulose and create more functionality, the team incorporated boron nitride nanosheets into the liquid that feeds the bacteria, and fabricated bacterial cellulose-boron nitride hybrid nanosheets with even better mechanical properties (tensile strength up to ~ 553 MPa) and thermal properties (three times faster rate of heat dissipation compared to samples)."

Probably already referenced here, Silicon compound upgraded to potentially replace PFAS:

The team is now hoping to work with industry and manufacturers looking to ditch standard nonstick coatings. And while there are some current scaling challenges, the new coating has already been applied to nylon, polyester, aluminum and stainless steel, hinting at wide applicability.
“The holy grail of this field would be a substance that outperforms Teflon, but with no PFAS at all,” said Golovin. “We’re not quite there yet, but this is an important step in the right direction.”

The big idea is to create an alloy with two different types of perfectly arranged atomic structures inside it. These structures are called subnanoscale short-range ordering (SRO), which are tiny islands of organized atoms and nanoscale long-range ordering (NLRO), which are slightly larger.

Today's big news:
"Steel production could get a makeover:
Study captures real time iron formation at the nano scale."
https://phys.org/news/2025-09-steel-production-makeover-captures-real.html
From the University of Minnesota/Twin Cities' own Jae Hyun Nam. The process produces no CO2.

I was thinking about earlier finds where a new casting process yielded greater strength than 3D printed Ni alloys....but this is all crude and nasty.

I was leafing through some medical publications about gamma knives, while watching Scott Manley I think it was--talking about plastic as an early memory material. The old plastic spiders you could press into a coin--and heat would restore them. Radiation therapy uses emitters to move around so only the tumor gets the full dose.

If this find about iron at the nanoscale pans out--perhaps a combination of radiation, maybe standing waves or something could allow better additive manufacturing.

3D printing really isn't a lot more than a three year old squeezing a spiral of mustard to replicate a pile of dog Pooh he saw in the back yard.

There just has to be more to metallurgy than this.

There is also something called "AlloyGPT."

On waves
https://phys.org/news/2025-10-microscopic-ocean-chip-reveals-nonlinear.htmlThe work is published in the journal Science.

Dr. Christopher Baker said it was the world's smallest wave tank, with the quantum properties of superfluid helium allowing it to flow without resistance, unlike classical fluids such as water, which become immobilized by viscosity at such small scales.

"The study of how fluids move has fascinated scientists for centuries because hydrodynamics governs everything from ocean waves and the swirl of hurricanes to the flow of blood and air through our bodies," Dr. Baker said. "But a lot of the physics behind waves and turbulence has been a mystery.

"Using laser light to both drive and measure the waves in our system, we have observed a range of striking phenomena. We saw waves that leaned backward instead of forward, shock fronts, and solitary waves known as solitons which traveled as depressions rather than peaks. This exotic behavior has been predicted in theory but never seen before."
