ATR 42 development and planned variants

I haven't been able to find a topic for the planned versions of the Avions de Transport Régional ATR 42, so here goes. To the moderators: in case this doubles something that's already present elsewhere, please feel free to merge it!

This image from a 1984 issue of TsAGI's Tekhnichevskaya Informatsiya shows four variants:

• ATR 42 (basic version)
• ATR 42 QC (quick change version, with enlarged rear passenger/cargo door)
• ATR 42 F (freighter version, with enlarged rear cargo door)
• ATR 42 C (pure cargo version, note the redesigned tail for rear ramp loading)

I once read about a planned ATR with turbojet power, but haven't ever found any renderings or specs.

ATR has canceled its ATR 42-600 STOL variant due to limited market demand, particularly as runway upgrades reduce the need for short take-off aircraft. This allows ATR to focus on enhancing existing models and expanding in North America, where they aim to replace aging regional jets.

That caption has rather missed the point. There was a dedicated maritime patrol variant - the ATR 42MP Surveyor - of which 9 were delivered. The ATR 42S (with 'S' standing for Spécial and Speciale) was a project for what would now be called a 'Special Missions Aircraft'.

Yes, the ATR 42S could perform basic maritime patrol missions (along with SAR) but its key role was to be surveillance. (As for the designation, that 'ATM 42-S' form seems to be intentional but no idea where AM got that from!)

And there is that designation roulette again ... SAR 42 and ATM 42R!

Since these designations were painted on the display models, the origin of that acronym soup obviously was not Aviation Magazine. I suppose that ATR briefly toyed with Avions de Transport Militaire/Aerei da Trasporto Militare, etc., before realising that no-one translated their corporate acronym anymore anyway ...
