Bell Museum: "Advanced fighter bomber" concept

Hi folks,

just found this picture showing a Bell "advanced fighter bomber" concept. It is from the website of the Bell Museum in Mentone, Indiana, which the member Dynoman pointed out earlier today.

Looks more to me like an interceptor than fighter bomber and I presume it has more than one engine.
Does anyone know more info or the right topic in this forum?

The fighter-bomber concepts of mid-50s were more little high-altitude Mach 2-plus bombers with all-nuclear weapons (usually one or two) in internal bay than iron bombs carriers. Think of the original concept of the F-105. This Bell smells a mile away of the mysterious FBX competition of 1954-55, which saw the submission of at least Martin's and NAA's designs. The NAA's one is on the cover of ASP-F&I.

I believe the one from NAA was the F-107 which also contested the F-105... SP
 
Hi!

Nice picture of very unusual aircraft.
I think, that wing's and empennage's airfoil has rhombus hape?
Anyone could prove this suggestion?

Steve, the FBX intended first flight was much later than the F-105/107 contest (probably no earlier than 1960-1), so it was intended as a successor. From what can be derived from different hints and sources, it was issued slightly later than the TBX competition (so in 1954-55), both intended for TAC and ETO, as high-speed, high-altitude nuclear intruders in the vein of the post-Korea all-nuclear strategy of the air war. And a correction, the NAA project I mentioned was on the PROVISIONAL cover of ASP F&I. Another FBX/WS-300A contestant could be this Lockheed I posted here http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,554.msg58074.html#msg58074 .
FBX/WS-300 was apparently paralled by a similar Navy/USMC RFP (or study requirement, more probably). FBX as such was canceled in late 1956, leaving apparently place to a score of VTOL studies (Lockheed and Ryan, notably). TBX proceeded with Martin winning, till it was canceled in turn. It followed a period of confusion (1958-59), till the TBX mission was assigned to missiles (Gen. Lauris Norstad decision leadng to the MMRBM) and the fighter-bomber mission abandoned VTOL in the short term, turning to STOL attacking under the radar for the 1965 timeframe. That's was the beginning of SDR-17, than QOR/SOR-183 and finally TFX.
