Top Gun 2

Probably the Chinese were wondering if the SR-72´s 'movie' mock-up might be as intensively detailed as the Su-75´s 'show' mock-up. :p

Grand entry in the Canne festival for Tom Cruise with jets and a 6 min (!) standing ovation by all the French industry.

I heard that the famous croisette boulevard in Canne will be renamed this year, La Cruisette. ;)

That's nice, he turned 60 this year so, good for him. I usually enjoy his movies, what's the word on Top Gun 2, scale of 1 to 5?

Crossed-fingers I guess and hope for the best.

Going today my brother-in-law got reserved D-box seats middle middle. Very excited

Free DLC for flight sim, getting to mach 10 is an interesting procedure but fun when you make it work.

Saw it on Wednesday with two friends (another aviation nut and a "mormal" one). I was sure to be disappointed and didn't get high expectations, but totally liked the movie!
As long as you don't watch it as a documentary so to speak but as an entertainment, it works! Plenty of references (some rather subtle) to the original movie, but perfectly enjoyable for someone who never saw it.
Aerial shots are breathtaking, even for someone who doesn't like the Super Hornet.

ps: the two aviation nuts were the one wearing respectively a flight helmet and a carrier deck helmet.

I got a few seconds into that, he needs to get himself a room.

A 6. Watched it yesterday in IMAX. The job they did on the Su-57s was incredible as were the shots of Darkstar.

Seen it today. A nice movie and great show for families. Aerospace nuts get to see a ton breathtaking flying sequences with a nice story.

Up for my second scession asap.

Notice:
The day before, I went through a 1980's shakedown watching the introduction episode of... Airwolf! I was prepared and that went well.

Well having seen the first Top Gun movie a few days ago in the lead up to this, I was honesty a bit "meh" towards the first one. I mean it ain't bad but obviously not quite my cup of tea. A bit dated and felt corny at times but I expected that.

Now as to Top Gun Maverick, I would refer to it as Ace Combat 7: The Movie (feat Maverick).

Go into the movie expecting Dunkirk levels of authenticity and realism of Naval Aviation and the like and you will be disappointed. But I was quite impressed and pleased overall. It's decently authentic given its target audience and one can tell that they put a lot of love and care into trying to get things decently accurate (surprisingly so in some instances) while being filmable and down to earth and also spectacular for the average movie goer.. It ain't a mindless and dumb movie that's for sure.

Go into it expecting Ace Combat 7: The Movie (feat Maverick) and you will enjoy yourself.

Edit: BTW it looks very good on the IMAX screen.

I liked that we got to see admiral’s daughter that Mav went “vertical” with Penny Benjamin. Jennifer Connelly 36 years ago, today and every year in between is a fine looking lady.

Hell yes, in the first, much maligned Hulk (of Ang Lee fame) she is intensely beautiful. She really makes Hulk's blood boil.

Say what you want of Tom Cruise and his scientology siliness, one thing is sure: the guy often promises a solid show with a lot of stunts, and then - HE DELIVERS. He seems to be pretty good at that (Mission impossible countless movies).

Nostalgia makes it better. :) If you grew up in the 70s/80s Top Gun was the shit. Before it came out there were articles in magazines detailing how the USN was going all-in to help make it as awesome as possible. (Camera rigs fitted to the Tomcat, etc.) The music was awesome etc. By the time I saw it on opening night, the F-14 going into burner on the cat during the opening credits damn near put tears in my eyes.

It was the biggest movie, by far, that year. "Danger Zone" and "Take My Breath Away" both made it into the Top 100 songs for the year.

Flash forward to now and there were a lot of people in the audience who'd seen the first in the theater back then. So the experience for those who'd experienced it back in the day, particularly if you're American, is probably a little different than someone just seeing it all for the first time. :)

Someone has made a paper model of the Darkstar. Looks excellent.

Full details of the build process and more photos in the link below.

I try to view sequels without jusgement, less disappointed that way. Having said that I saw it today in a 4DX screen. I came out needing a chiropractor. Pretty fierce those chairs. The film was fine if a bit contrived story wise. The effects were muted and all the better for that. Now, having seen the trailer, I have to go watch the next MI in 2023.

Top Gun fires a warning at China by reinstating Taiwanese flag on Maverick's jacket after its removal for trailer provoked outcry

Top Gun: Maverick has risked angering China by restoring the Taiwanese flag on the back of Tom Cruise's jacket in the new blockbuster.

In the original 1986 classic, Lieutenant Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell wears a leather bomber jacket featuring patches on the back, commemorating his father's battleship tours to Japan and Taiwan in 1963 to 1964.

But when the trailer for the highly-anticipated sequel was released in 2019, the flags had been mysteriously removed.

There was speculation the decision was influenced by Chinese film distributor and production company Tencent Pictures, who were part producing the aviation romp.

The flags had been replaced by random symbols in an apparent kowtow to the Communist nation's political demands.

But when the film was released this week, fans were relieved to see the flags had been restored, with one scene even featuring a close-up shot.

Chinese fans were left unimpressed, with one saying on social media: 'Fine, don't take our money. We will watch the pirated version.'

Top Gun: Maverick has not yet been released in China.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film. It's no auteur art piece, but it's well made with great action sequences and has some surprising emotional weight. The aviation sequences are quite breathtaking but the film reasonably stands up even outside of that. Of course, some of the aviation footage were composited together or sped up for more dramatic effect, but there's no mistaking that the characters are really flying in those F/A-18E/Fs, as you can tell on their faces that those are real g's that the actors and actresses are pulling.

The mission is pretty much a Star Wars trench run on Earth, and as a matter of fact, my dad commented that it seems to take inspiration from the daring Israeli strike on the Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981. Obviously some creative liberties from realism are taken, but the film has some impressive attention to detail. For instance, Maverick pre-breathing oxygen for a high-altitude hypersonic flight. Some nice touches include the ALR-67 RWR sounds in the F-14, the "pull up" Betty and altitude audio cues in the Super Hornets. Hitting the g-limiter override paddle on the stick to pull more than 7.5 g on the Super Hornet. Very good depiction of G-LOC and A-LOC, with that graying tunnel. Nice inclusion of the ATFLIR giving the WSO backseater a more prominent role, and also the E-2 Hawkeye for AEW&C.

The Su-57 is portrayed as a formidable opponent, quite menacing in the film and completely outclassing the F/A-18E/F and F-14 kinematically. It was a nice touch when Rooster activated the AWG-9 and ALR-67, and only heard the RWR sounds but didn't see anything on radar, as the Su-57 was directly in front of them and not detectable on radar while locking them up. At the end, it really came down to unorthodox and creative tactics and some lucky timing that Maverick and Rooster made it out alive.

As a side note, the F-35C was deemed unsuitable due to GPS jamming, although let's be honest, this is just handwaving away the fact that at the time of the filming in 2018-2019, the F-35C was still not operationally deployed on carriers yet. That said, the opening shot of the F135 (a direct analogue to the original shot of the F-14's TF30s in the first film) going into full afterburner is quite spectacular.

Also glad to see that the Flags of Taiwan and Japan have been restored on Maverick's jacket.

Great movie, better than the original, even if the mission could and should have been flown by cruise missiles. Very gorgeous air and land shots. Plenty of callouts and references to the original without being different enough. Loved all the aviation easter eggs. Some other ones: The old-school startup sequence on the F-14, manually selecting wing-sweep, showing the combined-cycled scramjet in operation, the Cobra maneuver, and the Skunk Works logo on Darkstar. I did get annoyed they kept calling the Su-57 just "5th gen fighter".

For the first time of my life, at 41, I went to another theater to watch the movie again!
And no, it was not because it was too complicated to understand the first time! :p
But I really wanted to enjoy the engines sound and music with a better sound system. A pity you can't mute Lady Gaga to enjoy the Mustang V12!

Saw it with some friends with 0 interest in aviation, everybody loved it!

Bonus for you, a picture of some friends and I the first time (I'm the one with the flight helmet)

Don't shy on it. I probably have seen TopGun (first movie) around 20 times... (and still counting) :D

Just came back from the imax theatre, anyone else thought that the film was a tad too long?

Love the climax though! Had a big grin when the RWR started blasting off and the CGI was absolutely spectacular!

Just red the plot on Wiki. Pretty smart, how they recycled 1986 stuff with brand new one. Heck, some years ago I mentionned the fact the only Tomcats left in the world were in Iran - seems they had similar idea. "Look, a supervillain country and the one and only still flying Tomcats ! Very convenient." Except of course they threw some Su-57s, for good measure. Make some sense, from a Syrian - Hezzbollah - Russian perspective.

Take it back to The Rocketeer for me. Curves, curves and curves.....

Going to see it on the big screen Sunday - wife is going and IMAX is out as she'll throw her guts up. That'll be a follow up guys only event on IMAX.

Enjoy the Day! Mark
