If you think you're spending too much time online, Facebook et al is about to offer (maybe) compelling reasons to spend more. Fortunately, there are still 24 hours in a day, people still need to eat and sleep, and Mr. Zuckerberg and company won't be able to squeeze another dollar out of anyone since incomes are also limited.

Maybe they could apply a X2 to time, so you got 48 hours in 24 hours. That way we would all live to be 160.......

Somehow, I don't think they can do that. I suspect the best they can do is offer a discount on a VR set, not that I would want one.

Best part - a brilliant way of summarizing the entire thing in a few, devastating words.

If Facebook demonstrates that everyone is boring and Twitter proves that everyone is awful, Instagram makes you worry that everyone is perfect – except you.

For the record, Twitter is the stupidest idea known to man. Ever.

Closely followed by Instagram full of naked people booodies, and Fessebouc (Ramsbottom).

Welcome to 2021, when people earn a living through advertising traded against pictures of their naked body (Emily Ratajkowski, is that thou ?)

We are really - but REALLY - living in strange days.

Snapchatte: snapussy

Fessebouc: Ramsbottom

Still looking for a lame pun related to Instagram...

Show of hands. Who wants to live in an alternate reality while wearing VR glasses?

Virtual reality seems to be like Fusion Power. Sounds great in theory until you try to make it work on a commercial scale.
The ghastly headgear required along with the brain's tendency to feel sick in an environment that does not match our senses should continue to keep me safe from Meta.

Zuckerberg is renaming Facebook on the basis that people will forget that it's a conspiracy-spreading, racism-spewing disaster and are paying less attention. Alas, he's at least partly right.

TikTok. Another form of uselessness that should never be used.

Oh, and Facebok is now Meta. Meta? Quick, what kind of image does that conjure up for you? Nothing? Same here.
Now, the good news is that you don't really have to engage at all with that particular web site...

The good news is that no one should have to deal with any so-called "social" media sites. This depraved idea that people can enjoy dealing with others through electronic only communication needs to disappear. Aside from a few cases, such as when people are separated by distance, or are in a few other particular circumstances, there is no NEED for this sort of thing and it needs to be rejected entirely.

But keep this in mind. You wake up one day in possession of billions of dollars and are surrounded by people who have plenty of suggestions about what to do with it. You are presented with new concepts and all that is needed is some of your money. Once you are assured that you will receive a significant return on your investment, you launch Meta, or whatever. You may have no particular talent or skill yourself but no matter. You can hire those that do. That's what's happening here.

Avoid it. Don't participate. Spend more time with actual, real people. If you can't visit, at least call them.

Hm, I suspect they said the same about telephones in XIX century... :)

TV, radio, newspapers, books. Doubtless also cave wall paintings.

This here very forum is a form of social media site. It's just a better one than West Taiwanese agitprop like TikTok, or socially regressive insanity-fodder like Twitter.

Disagree, the real problem is multimedia. Persistent side channel attack is no good.

RETURN TO LONGFORM TEXT, the proven communication method that build civilization.

Until the 3d supports proper abstractions for thinking, 'virtual reality' is a means of extremely poor noise to signal ratio. It is a book before invention of writing, not very useful.

Multimedia? What's that? What we actually have is a bunch of TOTALLY PUBLIC sites that feature vapid nonsense and photos of body parts. They should be CONDEMNED like an old building that is used by drug dealers and prostitutes. Not to put too sharp a point on it. OH, and if you EVER - EVER post anything that does not conform to the POLITICAL DICTATORSHIP -- your posts will be published, you will be forced out of your job, if possible, and Branded For Life as a bad-wrong person.

Personally, I'd rather get an official U.S. Government tracking chip under my skin.

So, here are the Classified, Private activities I do:

Go to the grocery store,

The gas station,

To my trash cans,

To some used bookstores,

To some old neighborhoods to admire the architecture,

And to work.

That's it.

Go ahead. Track me.

The function of dictatorships is to keep in power an elite that has achieved it by illicit means, it is an expensive and ineffective system of government that requires enormous physical means to contain the hatred of the people and cannot be maintained indefinitely because the economy ends up failing.

It is better what western elites do, they remain in power indefinitely generation after generation making people believe that they are free to choose their political representatives and live on their taxes in a totally legitimate way.

The problem is that both people and the work they do is less and less necessary and no longer need them in the factories or in the army, the maintenance of the welfare state is increasingly expensive, the old have too high pensions and do not die fast enough to balance the balance sheets.

Changes are coming and we can not expect anything good from them, they will end with the money and with the freedom that gives to use it. If there is something worse than dealing with an official unmotivated by his work is to deal with a machine programmed to say NO, it will be like talking to a wall.

So, the king and his court, along with the hereditary nobles, and the landowners. Nothing new here. There will always be peasants. The wealthy are getting wealthier. Again, nothing new.

They, meaning the wealthy, need the peasants. Without work, how will they be able to buy anything from Amazon?

They will always need armies to guard borders and property. And spies. The king needs to know when the people are plotting against him.

Factories, agriculture, property security and armies are increasingly automated and require fewer personnel. It only remains to replace them with robots with artificial intelligence and we will no longer be necessary for anything.

Artificial intelligence is fiction. All of that equipment requires monitoring, and other human beings will figure out ways to bypass or destroy it. Again - AMAZON, and others, want your money. Billionaires want your money.

Monitoring does not require too much personnel and in my opinion money is increasingly irrelevant in the game of power, they can print theirs whenever they want and do not give it value.

Isn’t that just X-plane or MS Flight Simulator. No aluminium or composites required - cut out the messy fabrication step after CAD and go straight to selling planes as a download

There is an old Russian anekdote about it...

The group of professors from aeronautical university were invited on a testing of brand-new air liner. When they seated, the pilot announced that they must be proud to be a first passengers of a plane, designed and build by their students. Professors looked at each other, turned pale, and immediately rushed to the exit - all, except one very old professor, who remained calm and relaxed.
"Run away, you old fool!", shouted one of his colleagues: "Didn't you listen what pilot said?!"
"Oh please!", puffed the old professor: "I know my students well. If they truly build this plane, it would not even be able to roll out of hangar!"
