"The search to design a replacement for the Bucaneer proceeded after the 581 proved a dead-end for the Navy. Conventional designs based on the 571 / TSR2 could not satisfy the long range and exacting take off and landing requirements for the navy. Variable geometry was not yet mature.

Against this background, Vickers-Supermarine designed the unusual looking pair of 582 aircraft. The Hunting H.126 research aircraft had taken blown flaps to the extreme enabling flight at speeds as low as 30 mph. The 582 built on this thinking by incorporating 8 miniturised RB.163 engines into the wing so that the exhaust could be blown down the flaps to give lift at slow speeds. To maintain pitch stability at slow approach speeds the tail plane was also blown with engine exhaust.

The 582 layout enabled estimated slow speed performance of 115 mph take off and 122 mph landing whilst not impinging on a 60,000 feet mach 2.5 ceiling and a 4 hour patrol endurance with a 8,000lb munitions load.

The starboard fuselage enabled the internal storage of weapons and munitions and the housing of large and powerful radar equipment. The single fuselage layout was also studied, but found to have greater drag. Wind tunnel tests revealed that the aerodynamic performance in steady flight and in gusts was inferior to the TSR.2 derived 577. This work concluded that Vickers-Supermarine had developed an interesting simpler alternative to variable geometry, however this design was dependent on the still theoretical small engines."

Sorry for off topic. I'm not sure the source book of this photo. But I thought that it's a interesting design which worth to post.
