As there doesn't appear to be a general thread on movies, here goes:

Just seen "Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan" Which is about the Battle of Long Tan during the early stages of the Vietnam War. It involved Delta Company of 6 Battalion of the Royal Australia Regiment. Overall, as a military history it was very close to the accounts of the battle. Some elements were over-dramatised, as per usual for any movie made for the masses. It was though very accurate, except for a few minor technical details. All the uniforms, ranks, weapons, vehicles were accurate. I bet Australian Army enjoyed making this movie. "Nui Dat" - the main Australian base in South Vietnam was a bit smaller than it was in real life.

The NLF forces which was encountered during the battle was quite accurately portrayed but they didn't really have enough bugle or whistle calls occurring to direct the troops or enough weapons of the correct types (they had too many AK-47s when they should have had SKS carbines and only two machine guns were shown when at least half a dozen were involved in real life).

I'd recommend this to any readers if they want a good, accurate, battle movie to watch. Now, all we need is one about Firebase Coral and Balmoral.
 
"First man", obviously. Kind of liked it, although not outstanding nor absolutely memorable. An honest-to-god biography.

The real thrill was to see Gemini 8 going astray, and telling my wife (I'm a space nerd and she is absolutely NOT - BUT we are BOTH die-hard fans of Christopher Nolan Interstellar)

"Look darling, this is exactly where Nolan got his Cooper docking moment".

I even mixed the two movies lines

My wife actually was a little annoyed because, as a space buff, I completely spoiled the movie :p

"ah, the X-15. Look, Armstrong will bounce off the atmosphere" (...Armstrong's X-15 bounces)

"ah, Gemini 8. This won't end well." (...Gemini 8 goes astray)

"Geez, the lunar trainer. He is gonna crash" (...LLTV crashes)

"The lunar landing. They landed 5 miles too long and with little fuel left"

"Yes, Armstrong finally divorced his wife. 25 years after the end of the movie."

My take:
Garland reinvent the huis-clos with a war story narrated meticulously by zooming down the scale of a platoon engaged in Irak and tells us a peculiar story at a particular place in the middle of a large S***storm. Beyond the horror, the disciplined bravery and the vivid depiction of combat, the disconnected absurdity of a war told down the elementary particle level, the foot-soldier, will strike your eyes like a splash of blood from an open artery.

*The guy that recently served you that unexpected delicacy, Civil war, starring Kristen Dunst in the lead role of a war photographer on a mission in an alternate... USA ;)

Another well executed movie from Joseph Kosinski, the man behind Tron Legacy, Top gun : Maverick and Oblivion: F-1, with Brad Pitt as the leading character.

Let's say it, I am no longer a fan of Formula one and went to see the movie w/o expecting much, ready to be bored into oblivion, thinking that even the 1990s petite fan with me that day would be unmoved by Brad too much seen catalogue of mimics, but, then more than two hours passed in a bliss (it's a very long movie with plenty to fill in).

I was flabbergasted that the time had been running so fast, just like if the clock watch mechanism had been swapped by a turbo V-12 driven around the full cardan by Ayrton Senna!

The story line is solid while remaining simple, there is plenty of action scenes as well as a sensible underlying message and there is no less than Hans Zimmer music to support the amazing visuals in par only with the best blockbusters of the last couple of years. You can feel the passion and the smell of money spent appropriately to best the execution. It's not a film from the late Greedy vague tendance. Forget Netflix, you have here a plain and honest story supported by the best execution Hollywood can offer today.

I understand that real F-1 formula drivers are among the producers. Not surprisingly, you will be able to feel that expectation for perfection at the apex of most action scene.

Highly recommended. And suitable for family with young kids.

If you liked House of Dynamite, I would encourage you to watch this one, filmed in 1983 that echoes so much with the actual events of 911, that happened a full 8 years later, and how the world watched it live on television.

A true lesson of cinematography.

I agree, Danger Close does a very accurate job portraying the Battle of Long Tan, with authentic uniforms, ranks, weapons, and vehicles. While there are minor inaccuracies, like the NLF having too many AK-47s and Nui Dat being slightly smaller, the film captures the intensity and strategy of the battle well. It is a great recommendation for anyone wanting a realistic Vietnam War battle movie. Films about Firebase Coral and Balmoral would be fantastic additions for those interested in Australian military history.

Went to see it recently and was taken aback by its quality and elaborated complexity. Zendaya is (at last) given enough room in a role to show how a talented actress she is**: She´s always spotless depicting the emotions of her complex character and support the movie by herself (the rest of the cast didn't seem to commit as much or weren't able to be directed correctly to match her play - astoundingly the supporting roles act generally better).

It's a real movie in line with the great cinema we like, able to walk the spectator across a complex scenario in less than 2 hours without you notice it. There is plenty of Drama indeed, love, intimate emotions and public fears. A perfect cocktail served in an harmonious way that push you smoothly through a difficult topic, akin to watching a bloody assault landing from the inside windows of a limousine.

Aaaah and, also, there is Zendaya...

Suitable over 13 but might be too complex for the youngest.

* If you make some online research, don't click of the Wiki link that fully disclose the story, including the ending scene(!) and display probably the worst picture of the actress you can find online.
**See Zendaya as the prettiest rendition of Dustin Hoffman acting heritage to get the right picture

Latest Spider Man is a Must, for fans and others.

Amazing story, great action. Director Daniel Cretton plays with the characters, their well known story together, extending the reach of this Super Hero blockbuster beyond the Bing bang boom of a Batman and Robin style. Impressive episode with a well built story that keeps an entire theatre, fully stacked with teens, attentive until the very end.

Great to see at all ages.

Indeed, it really rivals Raimi's SM2, and from what I've seen so far, the online discourse and reviews largely seem to agree.

The emotional beats were there throughout the entire movie, and it really leans into the theme of loneliness in modern life.

Holy f.ck, Tom Holland gave the best performance of his career so far. I mean, I've never really been sold on his portrayal of Spiderman, but this movie completely won me over and I was finally able to see the vision with his casting...

Zendaya was great as always and absolutely nailed the (tried to use the spoiler function here but it didn't work :) )

Those swinging scenes through Manhattan? *Chef's kiss*

What sets this movie apart from the last couple of films is that NY genuinely feels alive and feels like an integral part of the story... You also really get the sense that NY in the MCU is a major superhero scene.

Has anyone else seen the He-Man movie? I thought it was a lot of fun, and it saddens me to see it perform so poorly...

NY as in Glasgow here in Jockland with a bit of CG. to make it look nicer :)

recent Spiderman and Bat movies were filmed here to represent dystopian degenerate NY and Gotham
 
@snne : you nailed it better than I did. There is also the lingering moral theme of the transition to adulthood for teens. I think this was well served and positively put forward for the audience.
