OTTO MENGE photo of XP-81 #44-1000! Even rarer that I first thought because this is the first only TWO Convair XP-81s built by Consolidated Vultee. The aircraft had a turboprop engine in the nose and a GE J33 jet engine in the rear of the fuselage. The XP-81 made its first flight using only the jet engine on 2-7-1945 and it's first flight with the turboprop on 12-21-4. Frank Davis, later GD's president, made the first flight.
