What is going with British defence?

This is not about politics per se. However, as governments must decide defense budgets, some comments of a political nature are inevitable. The British Steel plant at Scunthorpe is in danger of imminent closure. Should that happen, no virgin steel will be made in Britain. The latest from the BBC refers to a special meeting on Saturday of Parliament, including the House of Lords. So, should Britain want to build tanks and the like, where will the steel come from?

The talks to keep production going at the UK's last virgin steel plant in Scunthorpe are yet to reach a resolution, the BBC has been told.
British Steel has been warning the raw materials used to produce steel in two blast furnaces at the plant may soon run out.
On Wednesday, sources said the government had offered to buy the coking coal that is essential to keep the blast furnaces going.
A meeting between government officials and Jingye, the Chinese owner of the plant, was held virtually on Thursday.

British steel has to be nationalised, been run down for too long. For defence of all kinds we really do need them to be invested in and grown and not just for maintaining a skill level.

This is not just the current team, it's been going on for a long time. We need to come up with smarter ways to make steel and make it profitable.

Submarines, surface ships, tanks et al.

It's not going to happen. Recently, a special session of the House of Lords was called to keep British Steel open. The owner had planned to shut it down. The owner was not British or European.

Military equipment will be purchased from other European countries in future. Perhaps a few indigenous designs will be built under license.
