Just received the a new book titled "V-1710 and V-3420 Designs and Concepts" by Dan Whitney and John Leonard.

This is an addendum or follow-on to "Vees for Victory" Dan Whitney's book on the Allison V-1710 and V-3420 is mainly illustrations of proposals that did not make it to test or production.

Some of the proposals illustrated include;
- An inverted version of the V-1710 with carburetors on the outside of the V
- Several gearing arrangements for contra-rotating propellers
- An auxiliary stage supercharger installation for the P-39
- A hydraulic variable speed drive for the engine stage supercharger
- A number of different turbo-compound arrangements including the V-1710-G10 proposed for the P-82
- A two cycle version of the V-1710
- Two different proposals for larger displacement V-12s
- An inverted 6 cylinder version
- A number of X and H version of a 24 cylinder engine prior to the V-3420
- Marine versions of the V-3420

and many more.

I highly recommend this new book to those interested in the history of the Allison V-1710 and its developments.

Thanks for the heads up. I already have the earlier book, so will be keen on this one (cover below).

I wonder if the V-3420 should have been called the VV-3420 (two V's), since that what it really looks like! (It's not a W, or an X, or an H.)
