They've also sentenced him to life in prison. Apparently, in Russian eyes, defending an invader's attack on your country is a civil and criminal wrong. This neglects that Putin and his armed forces have been targeting civilians in a way that is likely a war crime.

You are aware that both sides have dragged foreign nationals, be it the opposing side or third parties, to court over instances related to the war, right?

This isn't exactly something new, but it has little practical use because the guy gets either:

a) karted off to the front due to increasing manpower issues and dies anonymously

b) moves to central or western europe once the war is concluded

or

c) will find himself at the receiving end of a ballistic or cruise missile strike if the facilities he works at should be targeted

Whatever your preferred option is, the chance that he actually enters mills of the Russian legal system are minimal.

That aside, this kind of off-topic stuff belongs to the "bar" section, not the military section m

Crimea isn't exactly a "middle of active war zone", attacks on Crimea are sporadic and not often. And nobody would deliberatedly target archeological expedition, you know.
