Aerofiles has currently the enclosed picture on its cover page. It was from a Timken Co. ad published in 1939.
I realise it cannot have been a serious design proposal but it is a good example of what some of the thinking in those days was.
Timken is in the tapered roller bearings business and is located in Canton, Ohio. Can you imagine the size of the bearings if such an aircraft was built?

Of course, here's the photo, when the first ball for the first roller bearing
was shown to the public. Unfortunately, it went off unintended, rolled through
the whole city, destroyed 56 cars, 3 busses and lorries and damaged 5 houses.
In the event the company went bancrupt and the project came to nothing .. ;)
