Top Gun 2

By the way, what's a naval aviator's salary?

That's a pretty nice set up he's got there and restored P-51D's aren't exactly cheap.
""How much does a Naval Aviator make in the United States? The average Naval Aviator salary in the United States is $97,120 as of October 27, 2022, but the salary range typically falls between $82,373 and $124,867"
Probably got the P-51 because F4U

A P-51K Mustang is about $2-4 million

Maverick must have a side gig!
What's he doing in a P-51 anyway? There are still F4U's and F6F's out there. https://www.platinumfighters.com/fighters/

Gonna go out on a limb and say a P-51 is slightly cheaper to maintain? He's still a serving officer in the movie, yes? He's not flying the navy's hypersonic prototype at contract rates or something? Also, are there actually that many F-4U's around?
F4U / FG1 / F3A - 38 airworthy; 13 under restoration to airworthy; 29 display
80 total, 45 of which are in the US.

P-51 / CA-17/18 - 12 CA-17/18 & 157 P-51 airworthy; 21 P-51 under restoration to airworthy; 1 CA-17 / 65 P-51 display
13 CA-17/18 & 243 P-51 total, 6 / 188 of which are in the US.

Cavalier Mustang - 5 airworthy (1 Sweden, 4 US); 6 display
11 total, 5 of which are in the US and 5 in Indonesia.

So 80 Corsairs to 267 Mustangs of all varieties (single-engine only, no F-81).
3.34:1 Mustang to Corsair ratio

Might be less of a limb to climb out on to say it's cheaper to get a P-51 to appear in your movie.

Hmmm, no rumble seat on the F-4U. How can he fly off into the sunset with his lady friend? She'd have to sit in his lap. :D
The Mustang would of been cheap for the film:

That's Tom Cruises own Mustang
And it took all this time for someone to point that out ! While you can read it everywhere !!! :p

Regarding the discussion around Maverick/Tom ownership of a Mustang, the sequence where he unbolt blindly (look at the angle he put his tool) a spark plug (not sure) just to blow on it and feel satisfied with it, was ridiculously unrealistic. I am sure that some aviation mechanics cringed of disgust during that sequence.

Well, one of the "features" of the Corsair that disconcerted new pilots was that the cockpit has no floor... so she could just slide down into the fuselage under the seat. ;)

Carefully avoiding control cables, wire bundles, etc of course.

Mav just needs to paint it up as the Navy's Seahorse with a dummy tail hook and he'll get double-takes everywhere he goes.

Behind The Scenes interview with Set Decorators Jan Pascale and David Smith:

It's a real pity that no Top Gun sequels were ever produced after the original movie, given the evidence that apparently Maverick's career as test pilot stretches far back to the 80s, flying several aircraft such as: SR-71, F-117, X-29, YF-22/F-22, X-35/F-35, Darkstar and..... X-59? Okay, that requires a great amount of suspension of disbelief, because in our world, it hasn't even flown yet! Well, neither the SR-72, that means TG:M takes place in the future(Probably the most simple explanation)

Okay, these stories are getting ridiculous. First, they did everything in their power to discourage Kosinski from getting anywhere near the Super Duper Secret Hangar and now they ordered him to delete every photo the took of a Super Duper Aircraft? Sounds like PR stunts done just for clicks to me at this point:

I think they should have just called the film Darkstar and be done with it.

I'm waiting for Darkstar 2 - a kind of Knightrider/Airwolf symbiosis on Mach 6 steroids, with it further developed as a talking UAV so it can tell us itself how cool it is.

Woaaw! KITT but as an Hypersonic airplane... Nice one. But wait, can we add Pam red bath suit to your movie?

I watched this movie. A beautiful fairy tale. The plot is good. The actors' acting is just super. The scenario is questionable. I was surprised how the Maverick on the old F-14 famously deals with the Су-57, which for some reason climb on him in close combat ....... Why did they choose the old F-18 to perform such an important mission at all? What is wrong with the F-22 or F-35 aircraft for this mission?

For filming purposes, the F/A-18 has two-seater versions. All F-35s are single-seaters.
And there is no carrier born F-22.
