Projected originally as a joint program by Sukhoi and Gulfstream Aerospace; separate studies for aircraft of this type started by Sukhoi in 1987 and by Gulfstream in 1988. Design submitted by Sukhoi in October 1991. Gulfstream withdrew from program in 1992. First flight originally scheduled for 1994. Series production was planned in 2000 with demand forecast at 150 aircraft.

Model of Sukhoi S-21 six/ten passenger supersonic transport from the USSR-Russian Aviation and Space Collectibles web site.

Any landing you can walk away from, is a good one.

I remember this. Why did they not build it? Too much money?

Here an early study of the Gulfstream/Sukhoi SSBJ shown at the NBAA in Atlanta, 1989.
The picture was on page 47 in an article about the NBAA Atlanta 1989, published in the German aircraft magazine Flug-Revue.
This SSBJ had 2+12 seats, about 6500km/4039 miles rage, max. speed at M 2.0 and powered by two Rolls-Royce Jet engines.
Ignore the picture caption ;) - but please notice the rear entry stairs and the small fins.
I can't see, if it has a drop down nose like as on the Concorde or more like as on the Sukhoi T-4.

That particular configuration had synthetic vision and a periscope as backup.
So the nose is fixed.

I was soooo in love with this project at the time. Funny how US-Russian collaboration suddenly felt like it was almost at hand. And now, 20 years down the line, there hasn't been a true joint aircraft program. I too wonder why the SSBJ was shelved...

these are not S-21s. closer is S-51, and the second one is much later SSBJ concept

From an early 1990's publicity handout on the Gulfstream-Sukhoi Supersonic Business Jet, a new artists impression and the seating configuration at that time.
