When she was launched, the SS Great Eastern was the largest ship ever built.

Has anyone ever heard of any talk within anyone's naval staff about the possibility of naval vessels getting to that size?

D K Brown does mention Warrior and Black Prince's costs were responsible for the following ships being smaller but I'm a bit surprised given the number of 'supership' designs that were produced later on, there wasn't someone thinking 'what if 'insert opposition country here' starts to build this size of ship'.
