Hello,
I was recently wondering why spall liners, a very accessible technology, are not actually all that common.
In the west, some APCs have them. But MBTs don't.
In Russia however, they are present on MBTs as well, and APCs are at least offered with liners (though not sure if practically fielded).
The only difference I see in terms of protection between MBTs and APCs is that MBTs consist of a crew only, while an APC consists of a crew and passengers.
Meaning an MBT will consist only of personnel equipped with specialized PPE, and an APC may have a mix of specialized PPE for the crew and standard equipment for the passengers.
If AFV crew PPE can substitute spall liners, then it makes sense to add liners to APCs.
If the judgment to add spall liners to Russian tanks is based on the compact structure of said tanks, then it also makes sense.
But these are just theories, and it raises the question: Why not simply do both?
There's also the wild example of the Namer APC. It's so heavily armored because it maximizes protection (vs lighter, cheaper Eitan), yet seemingly no spall liners of any kind.
