In Sidney Pollack's movie "Havana" (1990) with Lena Olin, Robert Redford says to Lena: "...and i know a butterfly can flutter its wings over a flower in china and cause a hurricane in the caribbean. I believe it." (Rest in Peace)
 
Sneakers (1992) was honestly an old favorite of mine, one of those "comfort films" I could probably throw on and watch through at any time. There were a lot of cheesy "hacker" movies in the 90s but it was one of the few with at least some level of authenticity.
 
Another Hollywood great is gone:(? That's sad as he was a great actor who appeared many awesome films over the years. Did he act with Jane Fonda? Anyway he was older than I thought though 89 is a very good run.

That was a good film although IMO underrated and it had at least one other Hollywood legend in it - Sidney Poitier and IIRC one of the last films River Phoenix appeared before his tragic death in the 1990s.
 
CNN has aired a brief announcement and tribute to Robert Redford:


He'd just urned 89 last month and he died in his sleep (In other words he had a peaceful death), IMO that's the best way to go, just going to sleep one night and never waking up.

That name vaguely rings a bell so I haven't seen it, I suppose it came out in the 90s?

On another note he played the "Villain" if you will in the movie "Indecent Proposal" co-starring Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson as a married couple, he played a billionaire who noticed Demi Moore's character at a casino and made an indecent proposal to her husband (Woody Harrelson) where he'd give them a million dollars in return for spending the night with her.

I recently rewatched it and I'd forgotten that the late, great James Earl Jones was in it as well.

Not forgetting ‘Out of Africa’, Sydney Pollack's Oscar-winning masterpiece released in 1985, the film starred Meryl Streep, Robert Redford and an iconic aircraft, the de Havilland Gipsy Moth biplane, thus becoming a piece of cinema and aviation history. Out of Africa.jpg

Here he was showing already the signs of being a great actor.

I'm surprised that he only ever won one Oscar and that was for directing "Ordinary People" (Which starred Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler-Moore).
 
I stumbled across this interesting IMDB Robert Redford fact, apparently he lost a lead acting role in at least one film because he was too handsome:

The lead role in a classic 1995 movie was supposed to go to Robert Redford until the studio realized that Redford was too good-looking!

Robert Redford once lost out on an iconic role just because he was too good-looking. Before iconic actor/director Clint Eastwood took over the project, Robert Redford was heavily considered for the lead role of Robert Kincaid in the 1995 flick, The Bridges of Madison County.
While Steven Spielberg purchased the rights to the project, Redford was being heavily considered for the role. An executive revealed to Entertainment Weekly that for the filming, they needed a rougher guy who could pull off that grisly look.

I saw the film back in the mid-90s when it came out and while Clint Eastwood was great as the leading character Redford would've definitely been a better fit for the role.

Edited to add: Upon further reading of the article it occurred to me that big thing in Redford's favour would've been that the female lead was Meryl Streep and that she had already acted together in the 1980s hit drama film "Out of Africa" where they by all accounts (I've never watched the film) had great onscreen chemistry.​

Today marked the theatrical release of The Last Castle on October 19, 2001. Rest in peace, Lieutenant General Eugene Irwin.

I did a quick check and Robert Redford unfortunately never acted with the recently deceased Diane Keaton.
