William Green describes the Ki.104:
[...] experimental interceptor, was essentially a Ki.67-Ib with a new nose section mounting an Army 75-mm cannon just slightly smaller than a standard field piece.
Two Ki.67-Ib aircraft were converted, the second with a 'completely redesigned cannon mounting and nose section'.

Green on the Ki.109:
[...] a turbo-supercharged version of the fighter which would be capable of engaging the Superfortress at its own altitude.
22 standard Ki.67-Ib airframes were converted as Ki.109a with the original engines.
The subsequent 22 Ki.109b were all-new aircraft:
[...] production continued as the Ki.109b, the new version having an extensively modified fuselage built from the ground up as a fighter.
Green writes supercharged Ha.104 Ru engines were never fitted, the aircraft 'were incapable of engaging the high-flying Superfortresses'.

René J Francillon's Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War, Putnam 1995, says one Ki.109 prototype flew with Ha.104 Ru engines, but it was never used operationally.
