Hi,

the RAF Specifications from 1920 to 1949 had many missing,in both
Specifications and aircraft or projects.
I will speak about the aircraft and projects (just its names ) which
were not popular and involved in
many Specifications, and I will ask about some
misssing one.
I will start with the year 1920,there is 11 Spec.,and the unknown
project, which was submitted to 7/20 Spec. was Beardmore WB.IX,
and there is anther Spec. for Air Ministry Commercial Air Trials aircraft,
the tenders were;HP W.8,Vickers Vimy Commercial FB.28 and Central
Centaur IIA twin engined and the single engined;Austin Kestrel,
Bristol-29,Bristol-36,Westland Limousine III,Avro-547A, Sopwith
Antelope and Beardmore WB.X.
And the last Spec. were known and I suggest it took the number after
11/20 Spec.,who know more?.

Hi,

in 1921,there were 22 competitions, and the Spec. 20/21 was unknown,
did anyone hear about it ?.

also the Boulton Paul P.17 was submitted to 3/21 and the Boulton Paul
P.20 was submitted to 10/20.

Hi,

the EE Wren, three were built, one for 1921 Air Ministry trials and two for
1923 Lympne trials, and I suggest it was for the only missing and unknown
one,the Spec. 20/21.

Hi,

I also discovered that, the Saunders Kittiwake and Supermarine
Amphibian MK.I were also involved with Beardmore WB.IX in
Spec. 7/20, they didn't mention in the book, British Specifications
File.

Hi,

also the Vickers Viking MK.III was for the Spec. 7/20,and it
didn't mention also in the book,British Specifications File

Can you give us more information on that book you refer to. Sounds interesting.
Btw, in my limited experience with the British Specs, there are two types of submissions - those that were officially requested and the private ventures.

I have been slowly trying to reconstruct the list of all British specifications from 1920 to 1949 as the information found on Wikipedia is extremely incomplete, but it's a painful process, going through every single article and list of every manufacturer. Is there a place I could download a fairly complete list? Thank you very much to you all for your help in this matter!

Jos,

Air-Britain does still offer the book on its website https://www.air-britain.co.uk/actbooks/acatalog/Other_Military_Books.html (see fifth entry).

BTW (and OT), there is an interesting overview on the Operational, Naval and Experimental Requirements in Aeromilitaria * The AIR-BRITAIN Military Aviation Historical Quarterly No. 4/1996 and No. 1/1997.

Here is the first in a series of charts recapitulating all the British aircraft specifications between 1920 and 1949. Thanks to all who have contributed to this, either on the forum or in private messages. Of course I'm open to all suggestions and corrections for this and the following installments...

Hi,

from the book, British Specifications File, and other sources,we
can speak about the Spec.,but there is a small rule,I will speak
about year by year, and let the chance to discuss the missing
and confusing Spec. in each year;

1920;
1/20 Bristol-37 Tramp
2/20 Avro-549 I Aldershot I,DH-27 Derby,Bristol-55 bomber
3/20 Handley Page HP.19 Hanley I,Blackburn T.2 Dart
4/20 Poulton Paul P-15
5/20 AW Awana,Vickers-56 Victoria I,Bristol-56,Poulton Paul P-16,
P-18,Vickers Viator,Vickers-81 Victoria II
6/20 Vickers Vimy ambulance
7/20 Supermarine Seagull MKII,Beardmore WB.IX,Supermarine
Amphibian MK.I,Sanders Kittiwake,Vickers Viking MK.III
8/20 Westland Walrus
9/20 Boulton Paul P-12,Parnall Possum
10/20 Avro Aldershot III (I am not sure)
11/20 Boulton Paul P-12,Parnall Possum

Thanks, Hesham. But if we are to do any serious work, let's start by spelling things properly. On two occasions you wrote "Poulton" instead of "Boulton". So these should read: "Boulton & Paul P.15 Bolton" (note different spelling of type's name) and "Boulton & Paul P.12 Bodmin".

Otherwise the list seems correct, but where did you get all the 7/20 contenders from? All I have is the Supermarine Seagull. Also, you state it's a Seagull II, whereas I have it as Seagull I (from the selfsame source).

Also, for 10/20 I have the De Havilland D.H.29 Doncaster, NOT the Avro Aldershot III.

I think there maybe some confusion with an Air Ministry competion held in 1920 for which the Beardmore WB.IX, Saunders Kittiwake, Vickers Viking III, Supermarine Commercial Amphibian and Fairey III were all entered. The Vickers Viking won. I have not ever seen any relationship between specification 07/20 and this competition.

Regards Bailey.

Avro Type 549 Aldershot I, specification 2/20. Avro Type 549 Aldershot III, specification 10/23.

Regards Bailey.

My dears,

from the book,British Civil Aircraft from 1919,you will find
all those competitors, and for Seagull I,the book British
Specifications File began with Seagull II,and no existing
to Seagull I.
For the DH.29,it start its life in 1922 with Spec. 5/22.

Obviously a typo between 10/20 and 10/23 then, which seems logical given that the Aldershot is not at all in the same class with the D.H.29...

Funny, I also had the Beardmore WB.IX and Vickers Viking MK.III in my list for 7/20. Any chance that these two requirements may be one and the same?

As for 10/20, I realize I have the Boulton Paul P.20 listed in my own files...

Hi Hesham, Re British Secification File, Caution the appendix at the back of the book does not list all the aircraft and specifications. You need to read the text for each specification in the main body of the book. 10/20 is clearly for the DH.29 and 7/20 for the Seagull Mk I.

Cheers Bailey.

None of the various references I have indicate this. The competition was for commercial aircraft but, 07/20 was specifically for a deck landing amphibian fleet spotter, two very different requirements. After the competition the Air Ministry bought the winning Vickers Viking III for the Air Counsel and ordered from Supermarine a development of their second place Commercial Amphibian. This resulted in the Supermarine Seal II, which in turn became the Supermarine Seagull I to 07/20 and with further development into the Seagull II against spec 21/21.

Cheers Bailey.

From Boulton and Paul Aircraft since 1915. Spec references are 05/21 and 10/21.

Ok my dear Bailey,

I will correct the Spec. 10/20 as;

10/20 DH-29

10/20 DH-29,Poulton & Paul P-20

That's NOT what Bailey said!!! He just said that P.20 was for 10/21, NOT 10/20!

And please... It's BOULTON, not Poulton!!!

Also mind the use of the hyphen sign... "-" was used only by Blackburn on a regular basis, and a few projects by others here and there, but mostly the English government and manufacturers used the full stop sign "."

Sorry,

I will correct it.For the year 1921;

A few remarks:

1°) 4/21 has plain Vickers Vernon, not "Vernon I" (it probably became so once procured)
2°) Bailey, didn't you say earlier in the thread that the Boulton & Paul P.20 was also proposed for 5/21?
3°) The Handley Page entry for 18/21 (i.e. the Hanley) is described as the H.P.19 by hesham... That's not incompatible, is it?

I'm attaching the first two yearly charts in PDF format for 1920 and 1921.
Thanks hesham and especially Bailey for everything!

The Handley Page Type T, H.P.19 Hanley Mk.I was originally designed as a single seat deck landing torpedo bomber, to spec 3/20. The 18/21 specification was for passenger transport aircraft. BSF states that "Handley Page produced a "Hanley Transport" layout to specification 18/21 for a biplane powered by a Napier Lion engine, but it was not tendered". Had it gone further it might have received an H.P type number, but what, is unknown. C.H.Barnes in Handley Page Aircraft since 1907, makes no mention of this aircraft.

In the body of the text concerning 4/21, the term Vernon Mk.I is used, the title shows just Vernon. Both are probably correct. At the time the specification was issued it is doubtful that anything other than one version was envisaged. There is a good chance that the term Mk.I is retrospective from the time when the last ten aircraft of the original batch of thirty were built with Napier Lion engines as Vernon Mk.II to spec 43/22.

For 22/22 the de Havilland D.H.42 Dormouse is correct.

I suppose that you could say that 30/22 started the development line that finally produced the Sidestrand & Overstrand, but it would be pushing it to say it was for the Sidestrand itself, which was to specification 9/24.

In Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft since 1913, Oliver Tapper states that the Argosy was originally drawn up to meet a 1922 specification for a Middle East transport. He does not quote the 41/22 specification directly, but the match has to be very close. On the Hercules, this was designed to an Imperial Airways requirement in 1925, but this does not prove that de Havilland had not previously done work against 41/22, which was then used later in the Hercules.

Very important notes;
for the aircraft between brackets; Fairey Fox,Bristol-102 Shorts S.6
and Avro-563,I am not sure about them, their sources are from books
and magazines.
For the 1924 competition for two seat light aircraft, which its tenders
were; Bristol-91 Brownie I & II,Cranwell CLA.2,Beardmore WB.XXIV Wee Bee,
Westland Wood Pigeon,Westland Widgeon,ANEC.II,Shorts Satellite,
Supermarine Sparrow,Avro-562 Avis,Blackburn Blue Bird,Hawker Cygnet I
& Cygnet II,Vickers-98 Vagabond,Parnall Pixie III & IIIa and Bristol F.2B Fighter, and I suggest it was the missing Spec. 2/24.
