Rosmorport will not complete the construction of two icebreakers, planning to use tugboats with a higher ice class instead.
Moscow. November 21. INTERFAX - Rosmorport has terminated its contract with the Onega Shipyard (OSSZ, Karelia) for the construction of two Project 23620 icebreakers with the Icebreaker 7 ice class. It has been decided to use Icebreaker 6 tugboats instead, Sergey Pylin, the state-owned enterprise's general director, told reporters on the sidelines of the Transport of Russia 2025 forum.
According to the head of Rosmorport, the contract was terminated due to the high cost of the project after the design and replacement of imported equipment with Russian-made equipment. After the redesign and equipment selection, the contract price almost doubled, to 32 billion rubles.
"Therefore, it was decided that we will not build Project 23620 icebreakers for now, but will use the Arc6-class tugs built at the Crimean shipyard," Pylin said.
As reported, B.E. Butoma Shipyard (Crimea) laid down an Arc6-class tugboat, Project NE060, in September for operations in the Northern Sea Route as part of the fleet of the Arctic Basin Branch of Rosmorport.
In the summer of 2022, Rosmorport signed a contract with the OSZ for the construction of two innovative dual-fuel icebreakers of Project 23620 MW for 18.553 billion rubles, with delivery scheduled for 2024. Due to equipment supply issues and redesign, the delivery date was originally planned for 2026.
The Onega Shipyard, founded by FSUE Rosmorport, was created on the basis of JSC Onega Shipyard, which was established in 2002 using the ship repair facilities of the White Sea-Onega Shipping Company.
The B.E. Butoma Shipyard is one of the largest industrial enterprises in Crimea, according to its website. Its main production asset—a dry dock 360 meters long, 60 meters wide, and 13 meters deep—is one of the largest in the Russian Federation.
FSUE Rosmorport is Russia's largest owner of coastal and port infrastructure facilities and is under the jurisdiction of the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport (Rosmorrechflot). The company operates in 58 seaports located in 24 constituent entities of the Russian Federation.
