I have seen mention of what seems to be optimistic penetration results for this gun with APCBC and APDS rounds but from all my reading over several decades, this does not ring true for me.
Penetrating the turret front of a Tiger Ausf E at 800 to 1000 yards turns everything I have come across on its head and I do not think that is down to propaganda. The only thing that even comes close to explaining how underperforming the gun was in the field is the paucity of APCBC and APDS in real world situations. Otherwise there are lots of situations where the Tiger myth should not have existed.
Is this situation similar to the 57mm suggested for the 1940/41 T-34?
Figures I have seen suggest that the APDS 6LB'er is 2,700' per second which is going some for the time.
