The most resent research shows that The Milky Way and Andromeda will not collide until 10 billion years. There is a 50% chance of a collision and a 12% chance that the sun will be ejected.

The only change I see is instead of 100% head-on collision it's now down to 2% with a 50% chance of not being a direct collision.
This means there might not be a merger. Is that good news? Not if it leads to both galaxies being torn apart by tidal forces.
The effects starts 2 billion years from now and lasts 8+ billion years so I assume the 10 billions years given is meant to refer to a time when things have calmed down.
Aside from the fire works the best thing to see here is the re-awakening of the central quasar(s), an amazing light show for millions of years. In any case the galaxies will become a dead one. This means the last stars will be born earlier and die out sooner.
Anyhow, if we don't kill ourselves off in the next 50 years, we still have at most ~400 million years on Earth left.
Getting alien visits now might be a good thing to get off this rock.

The distance between stars is so large with respect to the diameter of their planetary systems that the probability of physical collision is small because the spin planes of both galaxies are not at the same angle. The main danger to any inhabited planet will be the radiation storm generated by the collision of galactic magnetic fields, its intensity can activate supernovae, eliminate planetary atmospheres, change the magnetic polarity at the poles and destroy all types of DNA. The close passage of another star would alter the dynamics of the cometary cloud, the orbits of outer planets, and even the orbital relationship between the sun and the inner planets.

The science fiction writers of the golden age believed that the capital of the galactic empire would be in the center of the galaxy and that the view of the sky from this fabulous city would be a very dense star field with hardly any dark areas.
