Gosh! You've made my day! The Shiragiku is truly one of the more elusive Japanese aircraft of World War II, and I was desperate for more pics myself...

Here is my contribution to the subject...

Tadeusz,

Is that a window at the bottom of the plane just behind the engine?

It would appear so. Makes sense if you are an anti-submarine aircraft. Sure, the Q3W1 was supposed to have MAD in it but that doesn't tell you if it is friend or foe. Need to use the peepers for that.

  • The Shiragiku(white chrysanthemum)was the trainer which used by the IJN from the middle of World War II.
The use of the Shiragiku was practice of the work which warplane crews other than a pilot and a copilot do when get into a plane. (trainer for the navigator, radio operator, bombardier, gunner, reconnaissance crew , etc)
Development and manufacture of the Shiragiku were Kyushu Hikoki and named K11W.
Adoption was carried out in Showa 17 (1942)as a succeeding machine of a 90 type trainer, and the Shiragiku was used to the end of the war.
There were some Shiragiku which used as special attack aircraft in last stage of the war.

You are absolutely right. ;)

The K11W trainer was a very slow aircraft so it was natural to try develop it as a an anti-submarine partrol aircarft (the Q3W1 Nankai) which would have the ability to loiter over an area for a long time to track enemy subs.

The Q3W Nankai project now has a topic of its own here:
