Andreas Parsch learned long ago of a US Air Force interim system for designating missiles, rockets, and spacecraft that existed from 1961 to 1963 (http://www.designation-systems.net/usmilav/old-missiles.html#_USAF_1961). He realized that this system helps explain the oddness of the AIM-101 designation for the Sparrow missile, because the "AIM" prefix did not fit the 1955-1961 USAF policy for classifying guided missiles. Does anyone know of little-known designations allocated under this designation system?
