Much has been said about the intensive use of drones in the war in Ukraine marking a sea change in how militaries operate. And now we have a new war flaring up between Israel and Iran that's being conducted in much the same way. Does this mean we've entered a new age where soldiers merely sit at desks piloting drones?

No. AI will pilot those drones. A soldier that sits at a desk is one that isn't picking up a gun to shoot at others defenseless in their desks.

No branch of the US military will risk that. They'd sooner invest in FnF munitions than putting FPV into small unit tactics. Even in Ukr v Rus we're seeing AI controlled drones propping up. Hardware evolves fast.

Essentially yes. The first-hand experience in Eastern Europe is that firearm combat became almost as rare as cavalry charges in WW2; soldiers fight FPV-drones much more often than enemy soldiers.

An AI controlled drone is a teammate with infinite respawn as long as the machines still work to build more.
Obviously a pioneer of drone tech, China, isn't rushing to equip alle troopers with FPV drones and instead guns, specifically QBZ-191s. I wonder why, as if they view button mashing as only a precursor to cloudware brains.

Meh. The closest analogue you could make is with the remote controlled tanks of WW2.

If Göring had not read Douhet, he would never have allowed the construction of Bf 110. If Yamamoto had seen the movie Trinity in 1940, he would have devoted himself to cultivating his Japanese garden. If he had known the principles of computing, he would not have thought himself so subtle in designing Midway. This "Trent" in Warfare started years ago
first with UVA and concept of Pilot sitting save Home Base while the UVA is far in enemy country.
also came this idea to equip UVA with AI to replace the Pilot entirely.

but then came the drone and put everything upside down
Produce them cheap in masse, easy to transport, they became a nightmare for current Military doctrine
See Ukraine operation spiderweb and lost of 35% of Russian bombers.

but Drones will not replace the F-47, F-35, Rafale, B-21or Tanks like M1 Adams or Leopard III
they will be there own weapon system genre !
Either as Drone for reconnaissance, Bombing, anti aircraft, anti tank, anti drone, even as anti personnel mine.
and it will not only flying drones also driving or walking and diving drones, that do the job.

Push button warfare to me means 80s to the early ‘oughts.

There is perhaps more hands-on warfare in terms of a bleedover of spycraft/soldiery and the Make movement.

Boffins in the field and not at a desk.

The funniest thing I have ever seen was the use of those assault scissors.

Little kid me hoped for anti-gravity hovertanks...instead, we have the current situation.

The best hope for peace might be for warfare methods to become so comical that soldiers just stop and ask themselves “what are we doing here?”

That may be more effective than the WWI Christmas Truce where the soldiers suffered abuse from their own officers.

If you want to see clashes of large numbers of people—that’s the LA riots….with the militarization of cops and the Munich-ification of soldiers.

That may be out of date. Recent reports have Russian troops increasingly closing with Ukrainian defences, in both infantry and armor attacks. Ukrainian armor on the other hand is reportedly getting very scare indeed.
