Like many countries, Spain in the first post-war years wanted to have a national assault rifle and undertook several attempts at designs among them this assault rifles which unquestionably, very similar to the StG-44, this unique prototype (FAC-51), produced by Calzada y Bayo at the armaments factory in La Coruña (Spain) in 1951 was curiously and bizarrely sold to a private person in 2004 . Watch yesterday's www.forgottenweapons.com for the French pre-cursor to this Spanish design. It seems that France hired several ex-Nazi engineers to re-vitalize their small arms industry post WW2. The loser of a assault rifle trial became disillusioned with the French and moved to Spain to help them design the CETME series of assault rifles that evolved into the Heckler and Koch G3 series.

The FAC.51 was not the first clone of the german STG.44,there is also the argentinian CAM.1 and a whole czech manufacture of the STG during the post-war years.
