General Dynamics is proposing a new class of destroyer tenders capable of at sea reloading of VLS.

Great idea, but it also needs to be more than a spare missile magazine. It should also have dry and cold stores if not some fuel bunkerage for the ships it’s tending.

So if we aim for 18-22k tons i think that’s doable.
Give it 3 mk38 mod4s and a searam for self defense and that’s about it.

Its based heavily on AS(X), so it should have ample stores and workspaces. Fuel bunkerage will be primarily for itself, refueling DDGs is still mostly going to be done underway or at a pier.

Sure mostly underway or at a pier, but if you’re reloading, might as well top off, or UNREP with the the tender.

We don’t exactly have a lot of oilers, so if an adversary targets them and takes out, our fleet is crippled.
Diversifying our resupply capabilities just makes sense.

We have distributed lethality, next is distributed resupply.

They might have the ability to "top off" alongside, but they aren't going to add a ton of extra bunkerage to support it. I'm almost certain they aren't going to include the hardware like the gantries needed to STREAM underway. Putting that many missions into one hull is not only expensive and filled with compromises, it's also the opposite of distributed supply. Assuming we're not at war with (checks FOX News) all of Europe, South America, and Canada, the best route to distributed refueling is to call on the underway and alongside refueling capabilities of our allies in theater.

Not to mention, the AD's job is to sit at an anchorage or pier for days or weeks to support resupplying a DDG squadron. I they have to give up a bunch of their bunkerage to the tin cans, they either need to leave to find gas or you need to put something like a fuel barge or god forbid a fleet oiler in the same location to keep the AD on station.

And if we’re at war with our allies who do we call in?

The old ADs could provide refeuling, idk if that’s underway or just alongside but they could do it, and it seems like an integral part of tending destroyers

At 18-20k tons there should be plenty of space for fuel tanks big enough to provide some refueling capability.

The bows look different from previous AS and AD, does that just reflect the length of time since the last designs or is there another reason?
