    Sikorsky Helo Projects, 1946-1947

Have recently come across some Sikorsky piston-engine helo projects from late 1946 and early 1947: the DS-160, DS-175 and DS-176. The DS-175 was a USN offering; the other two were presumably USAAF proposals.

    Sikorsky S-67 Blackhawk

    Hi, as I discovered before the Sikorsky DS-507 & DS-509,the S-67 was called DS-508; http://www.scalerchelis.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=16114

I believe what he meant by "number" was a Sikorsky model number, like S-43, S-44, etc. The XBLR-3 project never received any of these. In my post, "DS-" does not refer to Douglas El Segundo models, but to Sikorsky design numbers (such as DS-103, DS-160...)!

So weird, I think Sikorsky used two "DS" series in same time, for examples DS-103,DS-109 & DS-137 were appeared in early 1960s up to 1967,but you find DS-508 or S-67 was displayed in late 1960s also,so it is confused ,why ?!. https://apps.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/651416.pdf...

    Hughes VHLH very-heavy-lift helicopter

sferrrin, you might be thinking of the Sikorsky DS-103 discussed in this topic: http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1051.msg8380.html#msg8380 The shaft drive single rotor VHLH helicopter concept is larger than the Sikorsky DS-103. Rotor diameter of the VHLH is 246 ft...

Concept model of the Sikorsky DS-160 (DS- for Design Study) early crane helicopter project. Horizontal tail rotor is noteworthy. Factory 3-view drawing came with the model (copies can be obtained from another source -- just search DS-160 on SPF).

    Sikorsky Helo Projects, 1946-1947

Hi all, for Sikorsky DS-175,I think it was intended to compete Piasecki PV-14 as a utility helicopter to USN,I know Sikorsky submitted also its S-53 or XHJS to same competition, remaining the DS-176 a mystery proposal for which contest,I will search in USAF early tenders ?.

It was not in "S" series,it was in "DS" sequence,Sikorsky had two DS different series.

    Sikorsky flying crane projects

The attached photo shows a basic model of Igor Sikorsky's sesqui-rotor layout, which would evolve into the DS-160 crane helicopter study. This model is dated 1948, which suggests the DS-160 was designed that same year at the earliest, not in 1945 as described elsewhere.

We forgot to look at the second drawing,it was Sikorsky DS-509 Model,an attack version of RSRA research aircraft.

The Sikorsky DS-103 design was also very similar to the HLH but probably a bit earlier. It is described as a missile-carrier flying crane.

Neat! Given the early date of the design, it's fairly modern-looking in some respects.
