here is an AIAA report about testing the Teledyne Ryan BQM-145 Peregrine UAV,to
be mounted on F-18 and F-16 fighters.

More than just a project. Although the F-16 was not chosen, the F-18 definitely was. Here are several photos of the BQM-145A test-launched from an F-18, plus a photo of a model and a beautiful painting too. Most of these pics were saved from the SDASM website:
