No gates to drive over that I can see.

Which is fairly mind-boggling. Who thought an at-grade crossing with just flashing lights but no gates was OK?

In Europe, signal-only railroad crossings without barriers have been common for decades, esp. on quiet back roads. Even in the safety-paranoid and busy Netherlands, they're only being phased out gradually now.

Very common in rural Canada as well. Just not enough people to pay for the thousands of little crossings.

And not enough people pay attention when they do

Oh le con ! ;)

In Bordeaux the tramway crossings with roads are heavily signaled by flashing lights. Still there have been numerous collisions with cars stuck onto the rails, with obvious results.

I drove once in the aftermath of one collision between the tramway and a Mercedes. The Mercedes ended banana-shaped - the tramway had kind of "crossed the T" on the car.
