SpaceX (general discussion)

Hello Felix!
- I am at SpaceX today for EVA suit testing. This is an evolution of the dev suits.
- Suit pics will be released in advance of mission but I don't know when.
- ~April is the goal to launch & the pace of training is accelerating.
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays.

- Building and certifying new EVA suits for starters. There is a big difference between an IVA suit that is a last line of defense in the vehicle vs. suit engineered from the start to be exposed to vacuum outside the spaceship. That includes suit changes for mobility, life support redundancy, sun glare, some resiliency to MMOD.
- Similarly, the vehicle was designed to go to vacuum only in an emergency. There are changes to software and ECLSS hardware to make an EVA a nominal operation.
- Laser-based communication over the Starlink constellation is not an easy task either. Its not just turning the router switch to the ON position. Every draco firing could break a link.
- We are flying higher and closer to the Van Allen belts than anyone has gone since Apollo 17. The radiation exposure during those orbits over a few days is the equivalent to months on the ISS. Avionics don't like radiation which means there is a lot to analyze and sim to get right.

SpaceX engineers are doing an outstanding job tackling big problems very quickly.

Hmm. FWS comes to mind as well.

Years ago, George Carlin made a great point. "You don't need a formal conspiracy...". In this case the actors are in the same political party. They will be business and NGO associates when the party is out of power. We can look at the outcomes and form our own conclusions.

Federal agencies caught in environmental crossfire over Starship launches

WASHINGTON — Several organizations have filed a new complaint about the environmental impacts of SpaceX Starship launches even as government agencies face criticism for delaying such launches for environmental reviews.

news

On December 12, 2023, Starbase’s General Manager Kathy Lueders stated
“SpaceX’s plan is to *make the company’s Boca Chica Complex* its “premier manufacturing, launching, and operational center for our Starship.

”This clarify’s Elon Musk’s answer to the question I asked at the February 2022 “Starship Update” presentation, where I asked “how much will Starbase be used versus the Cape?”His response was appropriate when he said “it’s important to have redundancy” and went onto to clarify “SpaceX was planning on duplicating everything built at Starbase — at the Cape”, reiterating “redundancy is key.

”This clears up any speculation people had about SpaceX possibly moving all operations to Florida or any number of other miscellaneous locations people started drumming up for news headlines. Based on my experience since moving here in July of 2021,

Brownsville has become an international “destination” where people travel from all over the world to visit Starship at Starbase. In the last two years alone, the rise in full-time employees has tremendously impacted the local real estate market as well as pumped millions of dollars into the local economy with the newest “space coast” to become a hub for space tourism. The city is growing very rapidly. It’s evident SpaceX and LNG leading this expansion. Austin is definitely the “next boom town,” but I’d say the Rio Grande Valley may be a close second.

I agree with that Archibald. Any ideas as to when the launch will happen? As the New Year is fast approaching so that leaves little time to launch this year.

A SpaceX Falon 9 booster is being put on permanent display at the Dish Network HQ in Littleton, Colorado. They trucked it in last month and are putting the final touches on fencing, lighting, public access and parking. It is booster B-1021, the first one to be re-flown and the first one to land on a sea platform. No plans on repainting it. Can't wait to get closer to it!

It sits horizontal and spans a few walking/bike paths along the South Platte River. Nice setting. I included some pictures.
