RAF Specifications for Aircraft from 1920 to 1949

- For 44/23 I also have the Air Navigation & Engineering Co. ANEC.1 and something called the Handasyde-Raynham, no designation...

Specification 44/23 appears to be for the de Havilland D.H.53 Humming Bird only, but at the beginning of 1925 the following aircraft (built under ministry contracts) competed with the Humming Bird in an assessment at Martlesham Heath. Avro Type 560, Parnall Pixie II, Handasyde-Raynham and ANEC I.

- For 19/23 I have the Siskin IIIA, not the Siskin III. Could it be it applied to both?

This specification identified the design requirements for the Siskin III production standard, as developed against specification 14/22. The fifth production aircraft was set aside to be converted into the Siskin IIIA.

I can only find the Short S.5 Singapore I listed for 13/24, with Fairey and Saunders carrying out design studies. The Blackburn R.B.1 Iris and R.B.1A Iris II both appear on 14/24 and the R.B.IB Iris III on R.31/27.

A big surprise about the RAF Specifications,

from NASA site,a report for light and commercial aircraft of
1920,1923 and 1924,and that is mean the Spec. 2/24 and
its contenders were; Bristol-91 Brownie I & II,Cranwell CLA.2,Beardmore WB.XXIV Wee Bee,
Westland Wood Pigeon,Westland Widgeon,ANEC.II,Shorts Satellite,Supermarine Sparrow,
Avro-562 Avis,Blackburn Blue Bird,Hawker Cygnet I& Cygnet II,Vickers-98 Vagabond,Parnall
Pixie III & IIIa and Bristol F.2B Fighter.

For the 1920 competition,it was a mystery and I don't know what was
it ?.

Hi Hesham, if you can wait a few days I will have some more info on these light aircraft competions.

Cheers Bailey.

The Air Ministry Competition for Commercial Aircraft, held in 1920 at Martlesham Heath and Felixstowe, was an attempt to stimulate the growth of Civil Commercial Aviation after the end of the First World War. and that is meaning the 7/20 Spec. was divided into three Categories ?.

Hi Hesham, I'm confused, why do you think specification 7/20 was divided into three categories. Do you have a specific source that quotes this scenario? I'd be very interested, because it goes against all the documentation I have. ???

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, this is the info I have.

Cheers Bailey.

None of the various references I have indicate this. The competition was for commercial aircraft but, 07/20 was specifically for a deck landing amphibian fleet spotter, two very different requirements. After the competition the Air Ministry bought the winning Vickers Viking III for the Air Counsel and ordered from Supermarine a development of their second place Commercial Amphibian. This resulted in the Supermarine Seal II, which in turn became the Supermarine Seagull I to 07/20 and with further development into the Seagull II against spec 21/21.

It's not clear cut, there appears to be some aircraft which were "unofficially" assessed against the the 9/26 requirements, the Avro Type 566 Avenger Mk.I being one of them. The aircraft (G-EBND) a private venture prototype was sent to Martlesham Heath for 3 months in October 1926, to be tested at the request of the makers, but was not entered in the 9/26 competive trials in 1927/28.

Source "British Flight Testing - Martlesham Heath 1920 - 1939. Tim Mason, Putnam.

Also A.J.Jackson makes no reference to specification 9/26, in his chapter on the Type 566/567 in Avro Aircraft Since 1908.

Thank you my dears Bailey and Stargazer,

and from the book,British Specifications File;

And what was Fairey GS Landplane ?,also what is your source
about D.H.65 Hound,Westland D.H.9A and H.P. Clive I ?.

Hi Hesham, just a caution when using information from this book: The appendix at the back of the book listing the "Aircraft Type/Specification Cross Reference 1920-1949" differs in some cases to the individual yearly listings and the main body of the text for each specification.
In this case the cross reference quotes Blackburn T.5 Ripon I, while the yearly listing and the main text clearly quote Blackburn T.5A Ripon. I've been caught out by this inconsistency as well. :-[

Cheers Bailey.

As I read it, another situation similar to the Avro Avenger.

From The British Fighter Since 1912 - Francis K. Mason - Putnam
"The Firefly Mk II.....was authorised to undergo evaluation at Martlesham in May (1929), trials that inevitably developed into an unofficial competition with Sydney Camm's Hornet prototype"

From The British Specification File
"The Fairey Firefly is shown in the Air Ministry specification record as a contender to specification 21/26. In the advent the Firefly MkII appeared as a contender in the specification F.20/27 competition"

You pays your money and takes your choice......

Hi Hesham, some comments on 1930 Specifications.

M.1/30 Some disagreement with other references here. Will try and provide some more info.

4/30 Conversion by Saunders of a Supermarine Southampton Mk.II to a metal hull.

5/30 Started as a Vellore Mk.II, but finished up as a Vellore Mk.IV.

F.7/30 Some details to be checked.

S.9/30 Boulton & Paul P-58 is a query. (Listed in the yearly summary of BSF, but not mentioned in the main text for this specification.)

Quick check of Alec Brew - Boulton Paul Aircraft Since 1915 - Putnam reveals that that Boulton and Paul did propose the P.58 design to S.9/30. Three variants considered:-

P.58 Equal Span Biplane with Armstrong-Siddeley Panther radial.
P.58A Equal Span Biplane with Rolls-Royce F12 inline.
P.58B Sesquiplane with either engine.

My dear Bailey,

For M1/30,the Vickers-252 may be wrong,but I will check,
and for F7/30,the AW.21 was mentioned in the magazine
Air Enthusiast and for Hawker Fury,I think it was mentioned
in A-Z magazine, and for the P-58,it was mentioned it the
index of the book you have.

hesham said:
For M1/30,the Vickers-252 may be wrong,but I will check,

From Vickers Aircraft Since 1908 - C.F.Andrews - Putnam.

A Mk II (Videbeest) airframe was converted to the Type 252, for the purposes of demonstrations and submission to Specifications M.1/30 and S.9/30. Fitted for M.1/30 with a Bristol Pegasus IIIM3, flown under the SBAC markings as O-7 and later as G-ACYV.

From British Flight Testing Martlesham Heath 1920-1939 - Tim Mason - Putnam.

The Vickers Type 207 broke up in a test dive and never reached Martlesham and in September 1933 a modified Vildebeest O-7 (presumably the Type 252) was submitted to Martlesham for testing as a private venture to the modified Specification M.1/30A.

Cheers Bailey.

More on Specification M.1/30, the first Blackburn aircraft to M.1/30, which was destroyed in a take-off crash at Martlesham on 30th June 1933, was known as the Blackburn M.1/30 and not B-3. The B-3 designation applied only to the second aircraft built privately to M.1/30A.

The original Specification was M.5/28, the requirements of which no design was able to meet, such as a 20,000 ft. service ceiling. It was cancelled and replaced by M.1/30 which reduced the service ceiling to 16,000 ft. amongst other changes. M.1/30A relaxed the service ceiling requirement even further to 14,000 ft. As there where still no suitable contenders, M.1/30A was also withdrawn, re-written and re-issued later as S.15/33, which combined and amended the M.1/30 and S.9/30 requirements and resulted in the Blackburn B-6 Shark and Gloster TSR.38.

Regards Bailey.

For the Specification 9/23 for Military Flying Boat, the English Electric
company submitted the P.8 project,it was a large military flying boat,
powered by three 470 hp engines.

A question,

what was the Specification N.3 ?,and in which year ?.

Here is what I have for 1923 (I include the short descriptions):

3/23 Single-Seat Fighter Gloucester Grebe I / II

For English Electric, this company developed a single seat fighter armed with one
Vickers machine-gun and powered by one 150 hp engine, wing area 81 sq ft. weight
loaded 4,500 1b. maximum speed 200 mph.

And may be this project of 1923 submitted to this competition.

N3(a) was for a single or double engined float seaplane. April 1917
N3(b) was for a twin engined boat type seaplane. April 1917

We can continue from the book, British Aircraft Specifications File,

here is the year 1931 Specifications,and I can add;

about 13/31 contest for Initio Trainer, the Avro-631 Cadet and De Havilland DH-60T Tiger Moth, and
differed initial from 13/31 for Torpedo Bomber;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Air_Ministry_specifications

about C26/31E contest for Bomber-Transport Aircraft; also the Vickers Type-230 was involved.
