Sorry about the awful presentation, but my nice Excel charts just WON'T translate properly in this interface...

Hi Stargazer:
you have presented a great list on the Northrop Delta/Gamma.
But it seems you should leave out 292, the 7A for the US Navy. It was never built, and I have the idea it was never assigned a c/n.
See http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=10094.0 on this forum.
That way you will not have confusion on c/n 345/346.
Also see http://www.joebaugher.com/navy_serials/secondseries1.html where all serials are one off from your's.
It's just an idea at this time, I'll keep diging also.

no name or model number (X216H): twin-boom, twin-tail prototype by Avion with 90hp Menasco A-4 pusher and retractable gear; later modified with fixed gear, 95hp Cirrus engine
I believe it was later modified to tractor. I also believe it was called the '1929 Flying Wing'. -SP

As I said above, Avion was the name of the company that Jack Northrop set up to build his aircraft. This was the only type produced under that name.
Likely the "1929 Flying Wing" designation came about later on when the company attempted to narrate its own history (wouldn't make much sense in 1929 to produce an aircraft called the "1929 Flying Wing", would it?).

Thanks for these lists. I am a great fan of the early Northrop aircraft. For a listing of the Canadian built Deltas, take a look here, starting with RCAF 667.

Yeah, I know this great site, have been there on several occasions and always found lots of precious info. Thanks for the reminder!

Talking of Canadian Deltas, whatever happened to the rusty airframe that was salvaged by the Ottawa museum back in 1993. Was it restored?
My pal at the museum, John Bradley, had walked me through the museum's vaults and I'd seen this poor-looking thing there. He said it was to be brought back to exhibit condition, but I never heard of it since. Also lost track of John unfortunately after he left for Britain... :-[

Several years ago the wreckage was still in storage, no restoration work done. My understanding is that there is too much damage to make even a basic restoration possible.

@ Stargazer: here's another one.

This one never went to Spain.
It's a mistake for NC14246, which was a Lockheed 9F-1 Orion.

Thanks for the comment. Are you saying that only c/n 38 and c/n 39 went to Spain?
According to my files, there were 6 Delta Executives:
  • NC14241 Delta 1D-1 (c/n 38) sent to Spain
  • NC14242 Delta 1D-2 (c/n 39) sent to Spain
  • NC14265 Delta 1D-3 (c/n 40) for PanAm South American service
  • NC14266 Delta 1D-4 (c/n 41) sent to Spain
  • NC14267 Delta 1D-5 (c/n 42) sent to Australia
  • NC14220 Delta 1D-6 (c/n 73) transfered to Army Engineers in 1942
Although I admit there is a risk of confusion between NC14266 and NC14246, what makes you think they didn't BOTH end up in Spain?

Looks like c/n 41 DID end up in Spain.
Sorry!! My mistake. I noticed a message on another site which was not very clear and was interpreted wrong by me :-[ .

Edit: Second look; Indeed mix-up NC14246 & NC14266
