I've found in a second hand shop a novel called "Class G-Zero" by one Walter B. Hendrickson Jr. It is a first-contact story, not well written. But the author seems to have looked at NASA's plans for the 1980s (Integrated Manned Program), as much of the space hardware he mentions comes straight from it.

See: http://nassp.sourceforge.net/wiki/Integrated_Manned_Programme

I've tried to date it, while the publisher gives a copy-write date of 1976, the author mentions Mars probe called 'Voyager 5' which suggests a date before the cancellation of the Voyager Mars program (1971), but describes space shuttles in their final configuration, which suggests the novel was written after the design was finalized (1972-1973). He also describes a Boeing 757 design that I've not heard of before.

The plane carries 600 passengers, is powered by hydrogen, has 6 jet engines and reference is made to staterooms...

I know there are early DC-10 designs that sound similar, but did Boeing ever consider something like it?
