Finmeccanica Units To Convert Russian Aircraft

Posted by Tom Kington | July 11th, 2012 | Finmeccanica, Italy

Three units of Italy’s Finmeccanica have teamed with Russian defense export agency Rosoboronexport to turn Russian planes into patrol aircraft with new sensors and a mission management system.

Under the deal, announced July 11 at the Farnborough International Airshow, Selex Elsag will provide communication, navigation and identification suites, Selex Galileo will provide its ATOS mission management system and WASS will supply light torpedoes.

A first candidate for conversion is the Russian Beriev 200 amphibious aircraft, which could be marketed to nations such as the Philippines and Indonesia, which have large island systems, said Fabrizio Giulianini, CEO of Selex Galileo.

“This deal will focus on retrofitting the large numbers of Russian aircraft sold around the world and reflects the growing demand for airborne ISR,” he said.

Newly built aircraft could also be converted to patrol missions under the deal, a statement released by Finmeccanica said.

Giulianini said Selex has already worked with Rosoboronexport to propose to the Indian Navy to add patrol capability to its 10 Russian Kamov 28 helicopters. “This new deal is an extension of our work to fixed wing,” he said.

Selex Galileo also announced on July 11 that it has upgraded a King Air 350ER aircraft with its ATOS system and sensors for Corporate Aircraft SA on behalf of an unnamed customer, which a source knowledgeable of the deal said was a Mediterranean navy.

The ATOS system has previously been acquired by six nations and 40 systems are in service on platforms including the ATR42, DASH-8, CN235 and AB412 helicopter.
