Canadian sniper shield
It turned out to be neither a good sniper shield, nor a good shovel so was deemed just another silly piece of kit foisted upon the poor bloody infantry by the "good idea fairies" in Ottawa.
... one of dozens of Canadian military procurement blunders ....

Clive M. Law's take on the MacAdam Shield-Shovel.

The MacAdam Shield-Shovel didn't function well as a 'shield' or a shovel (due to its 4-inch handle). Nor was it issued with a carrying pouch on the 1899 Oliver Pattern Equipment. Despite Col. Sam Hughes' protests, that gave the CEF an excuse to ditch both for British webbing and entrenching tools before deploying for the Front. So, some good news there for the PBI!

The Shield-Shovel was conceived of by Ena MacAdam, Minister Hughes' personal secretary. But, obviously, neither Hughes nor Ms MacAdams actually designed this implement. Was detail design by the manufacturer - Midvale Steel Works of Nicetown, PA? If so, no-one at the Ministery of Militia and Defence checked their work to see if the Shield-Shovel would function in the field ... in either role!

BTW: Elements of Law's piece have been plagiarized on the Wikipedia page.

There are many such things presented by inventors, especially in the military field, but in this case, what is certain is that the person who opted for this design is missing a shovel.

Late 1930s prototype machine gun designed by EPK in Greece. The intermediate 7.92x36 mm cartridge is basically a cut down 6.5x54 Mannlicher case with a German 7.92 mm projectile. Feeding is thought to have been done via detachable magazine from the left. It's clearly taken inspiration from the Thompson SMG and Hotchkiss MG. Production facilities were being built and about a dozen pre-production/prototype guns were made before Greece entered WW2 and the project ceased. By the time the Germans started retreating from Greece to reinforce more strategic locations they had destroyed most EPK manufacturing plants, and none of the guns are known to still exist today, although I had read a few years back that one sample was given to the Greek royal family.
Edit: typo.

Translated from this German article:
In the competition for the 20-million-mark development contract for the G 11 awarded by the German armed forces, they (H&K) succeeded in overtaking two strong competitors: The traditional Mauser company had proposed a weapon with three barrels, all three of which were to fire simultaneously. The Diehl Group from Röthenbach, on the other hand, sought success with a rifle in which the projectiles and propellant charges were to be fed from separate magazines.
Does anyone have any information on the Diehl and IWKA Mauser designs?

Interestingly in 2014 Diehl was still working on the separate feeding of projectile and propellant and presented a 12.7mm MG called PMW 12,7 (Präzisionsmaschinenwaffe 12,7mm) based on this concept. (Source)
