DARPA/Lockheed Martin X-55 Advanced Composite Cargo Aircraft (ACCA)

Here's one for AeroFranz :)

Thanks for the heads-up. I think the interview said it all. Langford was pretty honest about whether Aurora would have been able to meet all the goals within cost or not. Lockheed won, but was not able to. Maybe Aurora would have suffered the same fate, but we'll never know.

I was also surprised because the original RFP included several performance requirements that a Do.328, and in particular one with a grafted wider fuselage, cannot meet (namely STOL and speed). So RFP requirements don't really count and it doesn't matter if you are late.

Here's a little something, something...

Sorry if I missed something on this thread, but what exactly is the X-55 ACCA for? Testing new concepts for future cargo planes, or is it a prototype for a C-130 replacement?

Google is your friend, really

under first link on googling X-55 ACCA - > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Martin_X-55

"The X-55 is a one-off aircraft intended to demonstrate the use of advanced composite materials in the fuselage of an otherwise conventional high-wing transport aircraft. There are no plans to place the X-55 into production."

was it too complicated?

Smoke must be getting to you Gregory, you are fiesty today. ;)

Was struggling with future UVK Kamov attack chopper article for Vertiflite and exhausted a little. Stay tuned for Fall issue that should go in print nearest days.

As an aerospace engineer worked on composite for the last 10 yrs, this is truly astonishing work. Great success (first certifiable, mostly bonded composite aircraft) I am wishing for the sake of composite future in aerospace industry.

Made from published photos, so to be taken with a pinch of salt:

Seems that initially ACCA was something more advanced in terms of demo, being scaled AMC-X demonstrator
