When I was younger I was told that the K5Y Willow was "Basically an O2U Corsair." As an adult with a copy of PaintShop Pro, I was able to compare the drawings of the two (plus do a little internet searching.) There's certainly a lot of resemblance in the upper wing, although the Willow lower wing has a significantly shorter span. The fuselages look similar, but the cockpit positions are off, and the tailplanes and obviously very different.

The best I've been able to figure is that Nakajima did buy a license to produce Corsairs from Vought, and the E4N2 seaplane was heavily based on the O2U Corsair (without being a complete copy.) The E4N2 evolved into the E8N Dave. So it's fair to say the Dave has Corsair DNA. But where does the K5Y fit into this? Did anybody from the E4N2 engineering team design the K5Y?

K5Y was designed by Kugisho/Kawanishi.
K5Y's base was Navy type 91 intermediate trainer.

Guys,

Excellent research.
One help here, please. I just got the Doyusha 1/32 scale model of the Type 93, and the horizontal stabilizer shape agrees with your drawings above. However, Arawasi book on the Willow shows (as well as all 1/72 scale kits that I know) the scalloped shape shown in the drawing beside the part in the photo.
When/where this scalloped stabilizer was used in type 93? Does anybody know it or I am goofing with something here?
Any help appreciated.

Thank you

Thank you, Blackkite!
However, both are K5Y1. My point is when they changed the tail. I failed to find a single photo with the stabilized depicted in the kit (your left side drawing). Note that even the rigging is different. My guess for now is that the kit represents an early version.

Thanks again.

You are right. I get the book today and I can't find any picture or drawing for my left side drawing.
