Love those unique ships...

* The only freshwater-carriers ever build
* The only paddle-wheel carriers ever build
* The only purpose-build training carriers ever
The neat thing, they were completely safe from any threat by U-boats, raiders, or Bismarck. No such evils lurking on the Great Lakes. :D

The general reason to use freshwater ships, if I recall correctly, was the concerns that transport tonnage of required size is scare (due to u-boat attacks and need to transport troops and supplies on both oceans), and any attempt to secure ocean-capable ship would led to enormous amount of bureaucracy. Freshwater ships were of little interest, though. Also, the sea-capable training carrier would be under constant threat of being mobilized for frontline service, if the situation turn dire.
