The two fighters in the first image are Rikugun "Kogiken" fighter designs. The top is the "B" type and the bottom one the "A" type. Both existed only as paper projects.

Kind of a Japanese Airacobra... but where's the air intake?

following the unicraft link you can see a dorsal intake that was not included in hesham's posted profile

The original drawings for this project do not show any air intakes, so it was decided not to "invent" them. Of course, in reality, it would've have had them... somewhere. Perhaps on the starboard side? ;)

The various Kogiken aircraft were discussed in the first Japanese Secret Projects book from Midland. However, not all of them were illustrated.

Cheers,

Ed

The Kogiken Plan I Type A may have looked like the Bf 110 but there is no evidence to support there was any influence on the Kogiken designers by it. I tend to think the inspiration came more from the Mitsubishi Otori built and flown in 1936 (around the same time as the Bf 110 was in development/testing).

Cheers,

Ed

Yes Ed's "JAPANESE SECRET PROJECTS EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT OF THE IJA AND IJN 1939-1945" (ISBN 978-1-85780-317-4) has beautiful colored drawings and detail explanation of these aircrafts.
Ed thought us the existence of "The story of IJA's aircrafts plan(日本陸軍機の計画物語)".(Aviation Journal 1980, stop the publication).the source of the drawings of these aircrafts.
We are waiting for his second volume of "JAPANESE SECRET PROJECTS EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT OF THE IJA AND IJN 1939-1945". ;)

Pic number 1 looks like an ME-110. Can anyone verify this was an actual Japanese design?

Hi!
1. The IJA Air Technical Research Institute(日本陸軍究所, Kogiken) planned twin engine light bomber tentative plan3 with ducted
spinner and forced cooling fan..
2. Speculative drawing of Manpi(Manshu Hikoki, 満州飛行機) strategic reconnaissance aircraft.
3. The IJA Air Technical Research Institute planned Light bomber tentative plan2.

Looking at the existing three-sided view of this plane, I don't think this configuration provides enough cooling for the rear engine.
This is because the hot air after the cooling of the front engine covers the rear engine.
To ensure that the rear engine is cooled, for example, all the hot air after cooling the front engine flows to the lower side of the wing, and the cooling air intake of the rear engine is installed on the upper surface of the wing. So box picture needs little modification. Box picture is good, but model is......
Anyway it is still better than the desperate difficulty of cooling the fourth row of cylinders of the Fuji Ha-54 engine.

As your 2nd picture says the the Kogiken plan Ⅷ high speed reconnaissance airplane was based off the plan VI heavy bomber. Here is the actual drawing of that airplane: (my notes identify it as the Rikugun Army Experimental Model 7 Heavy Bomber
