The TIKHONRAVOV I-302 was one of the Soviet jet/rocket fighter bomber built in 1943 as an unpowered version but due to the lacking required materials. The second prototype as a twin jet engines fighter just stop as the mock up before all the program was cancelled.

A bit more on this design from a file dated 1999 that I have just come across on a neglected disk.

DESIGNATION: Tikhonravov 302 (I-302, 302P)
DESCRIPTION: Single Seat Experimental Fighter

The 302P was a clean straight-wing aircraft of conventional layout, but powered by a rocket engine in the tail and two ramjets with rectangular variable exausts beneath the wings. Delivery of thr ramjets (PVRD) were delayed, and it was decided to proceed with a rocket engine (RD-2M) alone until the ramjets were ready.

The RD-2M also had some problems, and the 302 design was tested in a glider configuration as a 302P ("P" stays for Planer or Glider). Armament and some engine control equipment were removed. After several flights in 1943 and wind tunnel tests the flight stability was perfected, but there were no powered flights. The layout of 302 later reappeared in early jet designs (I-211,I-215 etc).

DETAILED SPECIFICATION:

ENGINE: 1 x NII-3 or RD-1400 or RD-2M ramjets (1,400 kgs st or 3,100 lb st)
WING SPAN: 11.4 m
LENGTH: 8.0 m
WING AREA: 17.8 sq m
ACCOMODATION: 1 pilot

FIRST FLIGHT: 1943
ARMAMENT: 4 x 20 mm ShVAK Cannon

Many of the soviet rocket fighters utilized Rocket/Ramjet propulsion such as the BI-1. Does anyone have any information on the soviet ramjet program during the war years? Did it ever amount to hardware?

Hi,

What was Tikhonravov I-302Sh ?.
