It just occurred to me -- apologies to anyone who came up with this observation before me -- the fictitious belly-flop maneuver into the denser portions of a planets atmosphere was first illustrated in the 'new' Battlestar Galactica series. Different reason, but similar flight profile.

No. The Galactica didn't have any flappy-doodles on the side to help maneuver. (Going to have to watch that series again. )
