The cats are believed to have started the fires by switching on electric stoves, the department said. Cats can turn electric stoves on by jumping on touch-sensitive buttons -- and once overheated, the appliances can catch fire.
"speciesist"? Seriously? I have been watching with great disgust as The Usual Suspects are turning over every rock to find more ists.

I somehow doubt Scott was being serious.
There is, of course, a question of how we view other species. Different cultures have very different views, as do different ethicists and policy makers. Questions like: How close does a species have to be towards us to have some rights (e.g. should we treat Chimps better than Clams)? Does treating other species as having more rights (or value) increase the overall value placed on life (including human life) or decrease it?
Then there are question like: Is wiping out an entire species a crime? Is wiping out a whole species a crime that is greater or lesser than murdering one human? Is capital punishment acceptable for ivory poachers? If ivory poachers are heavily armed, should park-rangers be allowed to engage (or should they avoid interfering)?

Occasional meat ingestion from scaveger or hunting action is observed on some herbivorous and omnivores: squirrels, apes and monkeys, giant turtle...While that's a bit shocking for modern thinking human urbanites, Nature is always open to explore new paths.
