I was looking through Diamond Distributing's Previews Catalog today and saw a listing for SENTURY II with a list price of $49.95. A quick check at the Syd Mead site revealed that it has a street date in October. Now I know there's got to be other Syd Mead fans here.

I was fortunate that I discovered that I liked
Syd back in the 1970's when I worked for Chrysler
Corp. and they had neat framed images from "Sentinel"
on the walls of the office building I worked in.
There was one near my desk that I loved to get lost
in and le my imagination run wild. I wish I could
find these prints because they were really neat and
were distributed by one of the steel companies that
Chrysler bought steel from (from what I recall).

I inquired about these prints and found out the name
of the artist. Then by a pure stretch of luck, I was
in a bookstore in Michigan one day, and found a new copy
of "Sentinel" (what is called "Sentinel I" now because
Syd also did a "Sentinel II" later). I recognized it had
the same images that I saw in the Chrysler offices,
and I immediately bought it (for $14.95). That's how
I started.

For a long time I only had this one book (before the
Internet was born). But after the Internet, I started
to realize Syd had done more books and I started to
look for those as well. Over the years I have bought
1 here and 1 there.

The books are hard to find cheap, but they do come up
from time to time. You have to be persistent about looking
and not afraid to jump on it when you see it for a good
price. A good price may not be cheap, but it wll be
less than you usually see. For example, you may see
it advertized for $800 in a number of places, but suddenly
you'll find that $200 copy show up. Snap it up!
I have bought several like that.

Thanks GeorgeA!

One of the neat things they tell new students at Art Center College of Design in
Pasadena (Syd is a graduate of there) is that you never know when Syd may drop
in, in the middle of the night, to see what is going on. I think it helps the kids in
those long all-nighters they frequently pull. I don't know if Syd has ever dropped
in, but it's cool.

You certainly got a good deal that day Michel. :) Probably the vendor is kicking himself right now for selling it so cheaply.

Best deal I ever got was Maxwell Hunter's "Thrust Into Space" for ten bucks, in an ebay lot of books. I think I succeeded because in the description the seller spelled it "Thurst Into Space."

$10 for a $300 book. Not too shabby.

I think the best e bay deal I've gotten was Michael Whelan's Works of Wonder. The dealer listed it Buy It Now for $20.00 as used and she used the publisher's stock image of the cover art. As I was only looking for a copy to study his use of color while working on my paintings I figured it would be okay no matter what condition it was in. After paying the cost and a few dollars shipping the book arrived - still in the publisher's shrink-wrap. Had she described the condition correctly she could have gotten around $125 for it at that time.

In terms of value today, my best Syd Mead find was a copy of Sentinel in a used bookstore for $12. Sentury, Studio Image 1 (Red) and Oblagon were purchased new when published.

If I had the money, I'd definitely be buying this. Besides the first one I also have his four sketch books that were put out in a large rectangular format. I wish I could have bought that training DVD he put out awhile back, but that was around $500 or $600.

BTW, I have that Cosmic Motors book, I got it on sale and it's excellent.
